Jimmermania won’t be coming to Houston. Jimmer Fredette was not selected as one of the six participants competing in the NBA’s annual 3-Point Shootout.
The reserve guard would have become the first Sacramento King since Peja Stojakovic to participate in the competition. From 2001 to 2004, Stojakovic competed in four-straight 3-Point Contests and won back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. Past Kings who’ve competed in the 3-Point Shootout include Jim Les, Danny Ainge and Mitch Richmond.
Here is the list of shooters invited to participate this year:
- Kyrie Irving (Cleveland)
- Paul George (Indiana)
- Steve Novak (New York)
- Matt Bonner (San Antonio)
- Stephen Curry (Golden State)
- Ryan Anderson (New Orleans)
In limited minutes, the Kings backup guard has shot at a respectable clip this season. Currently Fredette is shooting 41.3 percent from deep, which ranks him 19th in the NBA in 3-point percentage. However, he’s made just 43 three-pointers all season long, ranking him 100th in the NBA in 3-point makes this year.
According to a league official, the NBA invites participants based on a number of criteria. But 3-point percentage and 3-point makes weigh as the two biggest factors in the selection process.
Conference team captains Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade also had some say in choosing the participants in this year’s contest. For the first time in All-Star history, the NBA has turned Saturday’s festivities into a competition that will raise money for charity. Wade and Paul were announced last week as the leaders of their respective conferences competing in the four All-Star skills challenges.
NBA All-Star Weekend tips off just a week from now in Houston. Cowbell Kingdom will be in the lonestar state covering the festivities and providing the latest updates on the Kings’ relocation saga.
