Cowbell Kingdom confirmed through a source that Rudy Gay made the trip to Utah with the Sacramento Kings late Sunday, but DeMarcus Cousins did not.
Gay is nursing a left Achilles strain that he suffered last Wednesday in Houston against the Rockets. Since joining the Kings on December 9, the eight-year veteran is averaging 20.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in 34.1 minutes per game. There is no word if Gay will suit up against the Jazz on Monday night, but the trip to Utah should be viewed as a step forward in his recovery.
Cousins also pulled up lame in Wednesday’s game against the Rockets, but his injury appears to be more severe than Gay’s. Our source confirmed that the 23-year center stayed behind in Sacramento to receive treatment on his sprained left ankle.
“They’re receiving treatment trying to get better,” coach Michael Malone said before Sunday’s contest against the Denver Nuggets. “Whether they play tonight, which is doubtful or tomorrow (in Utah), obviously we’re hoping to have them back sooner rather than later.”
Cousins is in the middle of a break out season with Sacramento, including a streak of 15 consecutive double-doubles that was snapped when the injury occurred against the Rockets. He is averaging 22.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes per game this season and he was named to the USA Basketball Men’s National team on Thursday.
The Kings are 0-2 without Gay and Cousins. They currently sit at 15-28, just a half game ahead of the Jazz for last place in the Western Conference.
