OAKLAND – Rudy Gay is not just a professional basketball player. He is also a husband and soon-to-be father.

Gay’s wife Ecko is expecting the couple’s first child and Yahoo! Sports first reported that she was expected to go into labor at any moment Friday evening. That made a routine game against the Golden State Warriors a tough task to juggle.

“Obviously, you have to separate the two but when they collide like they are, it does kind of weigh on the back of your mind,” Gay said after the game. “ But, I have a lot of people around here that are in my corner and trying to make sure I’m there.”

Gay understandably had one of his worst games of the season, finishing with 10 points on 2-of-8 shooting in a 33-point loss. Following the game, Gay wasn’t quite sure what the plans would be to get to his wife, who is giving birth to a baby boy in Memphis.

“Honestly, I didn’t even think about that until now,” Gay said. “I guess I have to call somebody I know to see if I can get a cheap (flight). I can sit on the cheap one. Now if the baby was there, I might have to spend some money.”

Gay could’ve left the game if news broke that his wife was going into labor.  He kept tabs and stayed up to date on his wife’s status throughout the course of the game.

“I check my phone all the time,” Gay said. “I hope coach doesn’t think I’m just on the internet or something. But I checked my phone to make sure I didn’t have any calls and (that this) kid is on this way.”

It’s been a whirlwind year for the Gays.  In addition to being traded twice and expecting their first child, the couple made things official when they tied the knot last summer.
