The NBA Draft Lottery is today and for an eighth-consecutive year, the Sacramento Kings are attending the party. They are one of 14 teams hoping to draw luck in the lotto and win a top three pick in this year’s talent-laden draft.
The Kings finished 28-54 this past season, bad enough for the seventh worst record in the NBA. That also means they’ll have 43 out of 1000 ping pong balls in the lottery, which gives them the seventh-best chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick. Here is a breakdown of the possible outcomes for the Kings broken down by the odds.
The Kings have a 4.3 percent chance of getting the No. 1 overall pick, a 4.94 percent chance of getting the No. 2 pick and a 5.78 percent chance of getting the No. 3 pick. The lowest they can pick is 10th, however there are extremely slim odds (0.03 percent) of that happening. They can also move down to the eighth position (23.20 percent) and ninth spot (1.79 percent) if they’re not lucky.
The lottery has not been kind to the Kings through the years. Since its implementation in 1985, the Kings have appeared in the annual ping pong ball showcase 18 times. Their pick has moved down in position nine different times while moving up just once. The Kings ascended from sixth to first in 1989 Draft, but botched the pick by selecting Pervis Ellison. In 2009, they finished with the league’s worst record, but were bumped out of the top three and landed the fourth overall pick which became Tyreke Evans.

The Kings will learn of their fate when the NBA Draft Lottery happens later today in New York. The lottery will be televised on ESPN beginning at 5 pm PT, ahead of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers.
