Vlade Divac is one the most beloved players in Sacramento Kings franchise history. It’s been 10 years since he left the capital city, but he could be making his return in the near future.
In an interview with Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com, the former Kings center expressed his desire to work in NBA team management after his role as head of the Serbian Olympic Committee ends later this year. Divac says that he’s spoken to the Kings about joining the franchise’s basketball operations.
“I would definitely find some involvement in the NBA with some team,” Divac said to NBA.com. “Right after my retirement, I was doing some scouting for the Lakers. I tried to see how management works. I went to Real Madrid, worked for them for a year. That helped me to kind of develop some interest in management. So now my second term on the Olympic committee of Serbia — and I’m so proud of that, we did a great job — so something in management.”
Divac suggested that the conversations with the Kings were just preliminary and that he used the opportunity to share his plans. He visited Sacramento in March, assisting the Kings in their new partnership with UNICEF to help give children around the world access to clean water.
“My ultimate goal is one day — it doesn’t have to be tomorrow or two days, three days — I want to be a GM,” the former Kings big man said. “Go level by level.”
Divac played 15 years in the NBA, including six campaigns with the Kings. Known as one of the greatest passing bigs in NBA history, he averaged a career-high 5.3 assists per game in his last season in Sacramento. Following his retirement in 2005, Divac went on to become president of the Serbian Olympic Committee, a role he’s served in since his election in 2010.
