The Sacramento Kings announced this afternoon that Michael Malone was relieved of his head coaching duties. Kings assistant coach Tyrone Corbin will assume head coaching responsibilities for the time being.
“This was an extremely difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the franchise moving forward,” Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro stated in the presser. “Michael made significant contributions to the organization on many levels and helped foster cultural changes that positively impacted our team. We’re thankful for the commitment he exhibited during his time in Sacramento and wish him and his family the very best in the future.”
Malone was hired by the Kings on June 3, 2014. A former assistant with the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets and Golden State Warriors, the son of NBA coach Brendan Malone compiled a 39-67 record with the Kings (11-13 this season).
Sacramento assistant coach Chris Jent has also left the team under a mutual agreement. Jent joined the Kings on June 10, 2013 and has worked for the Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.
Corbin was an NBA forward who played for the Kings in the 1995-96 and 1999-00 seasons, and more recently coached the Utah Jazz. He replaced head coach Jerry Sloan in February 2011 and produced a 112-146 record. The Jazz let Corbin walk this summer and the coach joined the Kings in time to coach their Summer League roster.
