The Sacramento Kings have added Hall of Fame point guard Nancy Lieberman to George Karl’s coaching staff, Cowbell Kingdom has confirmed. Sacramento Bee’s Ailene Voisin first reported news of a move.
Lieberman’s hire makes her only the second female assistant coach in NBA history, following Becky Hammon in August 2014. The 57-year-old Lieberman became the first woman to head coach a men’s pro basketball team when she took over the D-League’s Texas Legends in November 2009.
In addition to leading the Legends, the Olympic gold medalist coached the WNBA’s Detroit Shock from 1998 to 2000. She has experience as a general manager with the Legends and Shock and has worked as a color analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports.
Rumors of a Kings-Lieberman relationship intensified this month when she volunteered her time to aid the Kings’ summer league team. Lieberman joins John Welch, Chad Iske, Vance Walberg and Corliss Williamson as part of Karl’s assistant staff.
