The 2018-19 season has been one giant mystery for the St. Louis Blues. The team has been a paradox, defying logic and continually contradicting itself from one game to the next.

Consider that the Blues have actually played really well against the strongest teams in the NHL. By that standard it only naturally makes sense that they’ve been pretty bad against everyone else.

Leave it to the Blues to bring their best against the best while falling short against teams they could – and maybe should – beat. If they are able to mentally and physically handle the better teams, what’s different from their approach against everyone else?
This is normally where you’d fault the head coach for preparing his team incorrectly for different scenarios, but this seems to be an issue with the players. That lackadaisical, “foot off the gas” approach is all too common with some of the players on the roster. They get up for the big ones and shy away when the spotlight is off. They play inconsistently and often leave fans wondering why they’re not playing with any kind of regular intensity.
How do you correct this problem?
There’s a front office job waiting for anyone with that answer.
