The 2012 All-Star Futures Game rosters were announced by Major League Baseball on Thursday and we find two former members of the UConn Huskies baseball program represented on the US roster.
Bethel, CT native pitcher Matt Barnes, of the Boston Red Sox organization, and Branford, CT native third baseman Mike Olt, of the Texas Rangers organization, were chosen to represent their respective clubs in the game.
Barnes started his 2012 season off with the Greenville Drive where he went 2-0 with 0.34 ERA (1 ER/26.2 IP) in five starts. He was then promoted to Salem where he is 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA in eight starts. Combined between the two clubs, he is 7-1 with a 0.99 ERA.
Olt is tearing up the Double-A Texas League with Frisco RoughRiders. In 67 games, Olt is hitting .308 with 20 home runs, 58 RBIs and four stolen bases.
It’s definitely a great honor for both of these players and more than likely an even prouder moment for UConn baseball coach Jim Penders and the baseball program.
