Tim Jankovic will take over the reins at SMU as he has been groomed as the coach-in-waiting since he arrived at SMU as Associate Head Coach in 2012. Prior to coming to SMU, Jankovic served as head coach at Illinois State leading the team to four NIT appearances in five years.
Coach Brown, age 75, steps down in what may be his last coaching stint possibly concluding a coaching career that has spanned six decades and earned him an NBA championship (Detroit, 2004) and an NCAA championship (Kansas, 1988). Brown has been haunted by programmatic scandal during his tenure in the collegiate game as all of his head coaching stops (UCLA, Kansas, and SMU) have been beset by NCAA sanctions.
In 2015, SMU was banned from postseason play and Brown was suspended from his coaching duties for nine games.
