USC Football, Race and Politics

Today, Representative Weeks is urging black football recruits to not commit to USC do to a issue regarding a University of South Carolina Trustee issue. Yesterday ,Representative Weeks sponsored a bill to congratulate the outstanding achievements accomplished by The University of South Carolina. He went as far as to recognize March 24, 2010 as “Carolina Day at the State House”…now this….

I am a little confused at his actions. Do you want what is best for your State and ‘The State’ University? Or do you want to be well represented in the media for not knowing what the hell you are talking about.

Representative Weeks, if you could please stay out of University of South Carolina sports and spend a little more time focusing on more important things. Such as but not limited to: education, unemployment, and the crime rate in Sumter.

Also note that the legislature picks the board, not the university.  Why attempt to punish the university for the legislature’s decisions?

“We are asking young athletes to be aware … there are folks in this state who say it’s fine to play ball but not be on the governing board,” Weeks said.

Those who say it is fine to play ball are also the ones offering a scholarship, i.e., the Universtiy.  Those who say it’s not ok for one person to be on the governing board are in the legislature.

“With that many board members, to not have a single African-American and to send the message around this world that this body does not care about diversity but yet we want to recruit black athletes? You can’t send that mixed message,” said Rep. Todd Rutherford, a Columbia Democrat and alumnus of the University of South Carolina Law School.

This body refers to the legislature.  The legislature doesn’t recruit black athletes.  The legislature doesn’t recruit anyone.

Thanks you General Malaise for the research and insight.

Politics and football are not good bed fellows but sure are good to talk about.  This however is nonsense and needs to stop.
