Ace vs. Ace Carolina vs. Ole Miss

Tonight’s SEC matchup in Columbia between two 6-0 pitching aces, might turn out to be one of the best baseball games of the year. Last year, the Gamecocks took 2 out of 3 from the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, and gave Drew Pomeranz his first lose of the season. Let’s hope the gamecocks can do the same this year as the Rebels are looking for revenge.

Pomeranz was named Baseball America’s midseason college baseball pitcher of the year last week and has been nothing short of stellar this season.  He is 6-0 with an SEC-leading 1.57 ERA, 80 strikeouts and 32 hits allowed in 51 2/3 innings.

On the mound for the gamecocks tonight is SC’s senior right hander Blake Cooper, who has also been great all season for the gamecocks. With a 2.85 era in 53 1/3 innings and 47 strikeouts, Cooper is not far behind Mr. Pomeranz. The word is there will be plenty of MLB scouts in the crowd tonight to watch this match up between two of the SEC’s best pitchers.

Ole Miss is currently ranked 14th in the country and is coming in with a 23-11 overall record and currently sit at 7-5 in the SEC. Ole Miss is playing good baseball right now, and with 2 of the SEC’s top pitchers dueling it out on Friday night, you never know what could happen. Plus Sam Dyson’s Saturday troubles continue to haunt the weekend series. We will need USC’s bats to come alive, early and often.  If USC can pull 2 out of 3 this weekend, I will consider it a successful weekend.

Friday and Saturday’s games will be shown on SportsSouth, so those of you who can’t make it to the game, catch it on the tube.

The weekend pitching matchups are:

Saturday, USC RHP Sam Dyson, Jr., 2-2, 5.87 vs. Ole Miss RHP Aaron Barrett, Sr., 6-1, 1.90;

Sunday, USC RHP Jay Brown, Sr.., 2-0, 2.84 vs. Ole Miss TBA

See you at the ballpark.
