With one swing of the metal bat, Carolina’s Brady Thomas gives the Gamecocks the win.
The senior from Anderson delivered a walk-off, two-run home run that gave the USC Gamecocks the 9-7 victory against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Game 1 of the weekend series.
Cooper didn’t have his ‘A’ game but a trio of hitters helped bring SC to victory combined with the stroke of Thomas in the 11th. Jackie Bradley Jr., Jeffery Jones and Scott Wingo also homered for the Gamecocks, who were outhit 16-14. Bradley and Wingo had three hits apiece.
Speaking of Bradley Jr., not only did he have the hits but he drove in four runs and helped turn a double play from centerfield with Alabama threatening in the eighth. To top it off he made a laser throw that got a ‘Bama runner advancing from first to third on a hit to end the ninth…stellar play from him all around but it was Thomas who stole the show.
This win moves SC to 33-8 on the year and 15-4 in SEC play. It also keeps SC ahead of Florida in the SEC East.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and will be televised on CSS and ESPN3.com
