Roger Williams, the current pitching coach at the University of Louisville will be in today to interview for the pitching coach position vacated by Mark Calvi last week.
Williams is a Greenville, NC native and has spent the last four years with the Cardinals. While at Louisville, the Cardinals made three straight NCAA Championship appearances, back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament titles and the program’s first BIG EAST regular-season title in 2009.
Prior to coaching at Louisville, Williams has made coaching stops at Georgia, UNC (where he coached with Chad Holbrook) and at East Carolina. I think this would be a great hire for the Gamecocks as it looks like Williams is an excellent pitching coach. Stay tuned as Carolina interviews others for the pitching coach job.
In an unrelated Gamecocks baseball news item — Carolina’s very own Jackie Bradley Jr. will be throwing out the first pitch at tonight’s Kansas City Royals game. This sounds like a great honor and we all know how the Royals love to draft Gamecocks baseball players. Maybe next year JBJ can join the likes of Whit Merrifield and Parker Bangs as a member of the Royals organization.
Here is a photo from last night, as JBJ threw out the first pitch at the Royals/Blue Jay’s game.
