The 2010-2011 USC Men’s Basketball has gotten off on the right foot with a good win versus a scrappy Elon team by the score of 94-79 last night. Yes it was Elon but winning the first game is always a good thing- just ask the Vols.
What was really nice to see in this win was how spread out the scoring was and the effort. In prior years, the bulk of the scoring would have been handled by a few players so this is a new thing for us the fan to wintess.
Sam Muldrow scored 20 points, Lakeem Jacksonadded a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds), Mailk Cooke scored 13 points, Ramon Galloway added 11 points, Brian Richardson put in 10 and Ellington had 8 points with his 7 assists.
I can not recall seeing such a team approach in putting forth a winning effort like this. I know it was Elon but just view the box score and you will see this team has huge upside. They may need this year to build but rest assured they will give many teams fits and will a very good team in the future.
This Coach Horn Quote sums it up –
“I think the story of this game is what we hope is going to be the story of our team and our entire program moving forward as we continue to build- it was the strength of our team tonight. We had over 10 guys in double figures (minutes). We had nobody over 30 minutes. We had six guys in double figures on points. We had 23 assists, which is terrific. We also took care of the ball pretty good, too. We saw some different guys do things that we didn’t see early. We had guys like Bruce (Ellington) who had 23 points the first (exhibition) game and tonight didn’t score well. But I thought he controlled the game and was unbelievable at getting shots for others. He was terrific defensively. Those are all positive things that we can take and build on. Obviously we have a lot of work to do. Our conversion defense was bad. We gave them too many open looks, especially for a team that shot the three as well as they do. I think those are the kinds of things that we can fix moving forward. It was a team effort tonight. We saw a lot of guys contributing.”
Up next for the Gamecocks is a shot at No. 2 Michigan State in East Lansing on Tuesday night.
