Gamecock football finished the 2010 season ranked 22nd in the country in both the final Associated Press and USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches polls. That is a nice way to close out the 2010 season and enter the 2011 season. The Gamecocks finished the 2010 season with a 9-5 record and captured their first SEC Eastern Division title.
This season-ending top-25 ranking is the first time USC has accomplished this since the 2001 season. South Carolina was one of six SEC schools to be ranked and the lowest out of the six. Other SEC teams finishing above USC in the final polls are LSU (No. 8 in both), Alabama (No. 10 in AP; No. 11 in Coaches), Arkansas (No. 12 in both) and Mississippi State (No. 15 in AP; No. 17 in Coaches).
The final rankings mean USC has now been nationally ranked in 15 consecutive polls, three shy of the school record. USC was ranked for 18 straight weeks in 1987-88 and 2000-2002. Expect USC to open the 2011 polls ranked so let’s hope this record can be broken soon.
This closes a great chapter for USC football and gives much to build from. Expect the progression of the football to continue.
