Beamer Ball Leaves South Carolina

The University of South Carolina lost a great recruiter and a decent special teams coach in Shane Beamer, who is leaving the program to take at job at Virginia Tech.  He will be working with his father, Hokies coach Frank Beamer.  Exiting South Carolina is “Beamer Ball.”

Prior to arriving in Columbia, Beamer was an assistant at Mississippi State.  Beamer has been at USC the past four seasons.  He also coached the safeties this past season along with special teams duties. He has been the recruiting coordinator since 2008.  He will be leaving USC to take a VT offensive position (running backs coach).  That is what he wanted, a chance on the offensive side of the ball so we can not fault him for leaving to do what he wants.  Along with the chance to work with his dad.  I am sure Coach Spurrier understands what that is like.  This Gamecocks blog does hate to lose him as he was a great recruiter that opened up many doors for the program.  He connected with the players and has helped to build a great foundation for USC going forward.

Let’s hope that recruiting does not suffer and the program can get in a top-notch special teams coach.  Beamer did good things at USC, his fingerprints are on the program and we can only hope that he finds success in the next chapter of his life.

In other football news at USC…
USC assistant  head coach for defense Ellis Johnson said Monday he is moving Akeem Auguste back to cornerback this spring.  All we can say is…about time as this is logical.  Last season, he shifted between corner and safety thus some of the issues in our mind with the secondary.  Johnson also updated Gamecock nation that linebacker Qua Gilchrist will miss all of spring practice after having shoulder surgery.  Johnson aslo made mention of Devonte Holloman and the idea of moving him to the SPUR position or weakside linebacker. Holloman is a big, physical safety and I feel he should stay where he is.  But Ellis has not called us for that opinion.

Spurrier said someone from the current coaching staff would likely take over the recruiting coordinator role. Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was recently named one of Rivals.com‘s top 25 recruiters.  No word yet on who nor who will be hired for special teams.
