The Tampa Bay Lightning has signed defenseman Mathieu Roy to a one-way contract for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.
Roy played in 51 games with the Hamburg Freezers of the German Elite League this season, accumulating eight goals, 26 points and a plus-10 rating. The 6’2″, 214 lbs. defenseman led all Freezers blue-liners in goals and was tied for the lead in points. He also played in six playoff games, dishing out five assists, tied for the most on the team during the playoffs.
The 2003 seventh-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers has played in 65 career NHL games with the Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets and Oilers, netting two goals and 13 points. Roy, who played in four games with Tampa Bay during the 2010-11 season, also playing in 45 games with the Norfolk Admirals under current Lightning head coach Jon Cooper.
The signing of Roy clears the way for Radko Gudas and Richard Panik to be returned to Syracuse for the AHL playoffs.
