Former Lightning forward Shawn Burr has died. He was 47.
Burr passed away Monday evening at a Detroit area hospital after falling at his home this past weekend.
Burr had been battling cancer. According to Detroit local Channel 4, Burr hit his head when he fell this weekend, but the exact cause of death is not yet known.
Last year he teamed with the Michigan Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to try and help build up the state’s bone marrow registry.
Burr was drafted seventh overall by the Drtroit Red Wings in 1984. He played 878 games with Detroit, the Lightning and the San Jose Sharks.
He played two seasons with the Bolts from 1995 – 1997 scoring 27 goals and dishing out 36 assists.
The Sarnia, Ontario native had career totals of 181 goals and 259 assists in 16 years. His best season was with the Red Wings in 1989-90 when he accumulated 56 points in 76 games.
On a personal note, I worked with Shawn in Detroit and found him to be a genuinely nice man who had a larger than life personality.
