A Choke Job Unlike Any Other

So there was the Masters yesterday. You might have heard of it. It’s that big golf tournament in Georgia that at every turn celebrates the fact it has unparalleled tradition. You know, how WASP, elitist golf clubs in a part of the country infamous for that whole slavery debacle a few years back are a tradition to celebrate. Anyway, 48-year old, never-won-a-major-tournament Kenny Perry needed to par one of the final two holes to win the little get together yesterday and bogeyed both, leading to a sudden death playoff (I’m amazed they don’t call it something nicer sounding in golf). He didn’t win that either and completed what should have been the biggest choke of the weekend.

The University of Miami (Ohio) Redhawks would not be outdone. They’re giving Perry’s choke a run for its money.

They were playing in the NCAA title game against Boston University yesterday looking to win their school’s first national title of any kind and, well, let’s just say Perry had a better day than them. The Redhawks were leading 3-1 with a minute to go in the third and the BU Terriers pulled their goalie. The Redhawks would surrender two goals in that minute (see the video below) and the game would head to overtime. What happened after that? Well, make an educated guess and then join me after the jump.

If you had “Redhawks lose in OT after a shot deflects off the leg of their defender” you’re correct!

The good news for Kenny Perry is that by finishing in the Top 5 at the Masters, he’s automatically invited back next year. So he’s got that. Seven Miami seniors will never get a shot at the title again. Plus it’s hockey, so you never know if your team will ever make it back. That royally sucks. It’s no picnic but eventually you’ll accept it and move on. Take it from someone who lost the biggest race of their life by one hundreth of a second.

Oh and, Perry sealed his fate when he said before the weekend (paraphrasing), “I’ve got everything I need in life. Anything else at this point is just a bonus.” So as soon as those words came out of his mouth, you had to know he wasn’t going to win.
