So, stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Chris Drury, now a famous hockey player, was once — get this — a Little League Baseball Champion back when he was a kid. What an amazing story! This would make for a great piece for me to write about at FanHouse. We could go on and on about how great Little League baseball is and how the values Chris learned there helped get him to the NHL. Well, I could if it hadn’t already been for the fact that this story gets mentioned and wrote about and re-wrote about everytime Chris does anything. I think ESPN has it filed somewhere deep in Bristol to pull out every year during their coverage of the LLWS.
But wait! There’s a new twist on the story!
Chris was enshrined in the Little League Hall of Excellence! So let’s all write it up the story again!
Now I’m not hating on a guy’s childhood accomplishments. I’m not hating on Little League. I’m simply hating on the folks who decide that this story is endlessly newsworthy. And I don’t mean it’s been written about a few times. Chris won the LLWS twenty years ago and at least fifty times a year since then we’ve been reminded of it. So let’s get a new story. Or a new angle. Or something. Write about where his teammates are now. Maybe he’s given back to the Little League organization. I don’t know… Anything. Just leave this poor horse alone! Think about the horse!
