Welcome to Week Four of the 2-time Slammy nominated Race to QB Mountain watch list.
Last Week Thoughts
We had some movement, as detailed by Buffalo Wins Staffer Mike McKenzie. Stidham had the second most efficient performance in SEC history against Mercer in a 24-10 win. Josh Rosen and the UCLA Bruins ran out of magic against Tennessee transfer Riley Ferguson and his Memphis Tigers.
Josh Allen against Oregon went like you think Josh Allen against Oregon would. My man even deleted Twitter from his phone after the loss. Phew.
Sam Darnold held up his end of the bargain against Texas, despite a late scare. Lamar Jackson was eaten by the Clemson defensive machine.
Pitt? What? Who? Oklahoma State? Rudolph? Nah, that didn’t happen. Pitt had a bye folks.
NFL Team Check ins:
The biggest stories of note are the good teams gone bad so far in the NFL. The Bengals, Giants, Colts, Saints and Chargers having 0-2 records isn’t panic-worthy yet, but should these teams also dive into the 2018 QB pool, the Bills would be #gritting their way to perhaps the 4th-6th QB instead of say the 3rd as they might versus the Jets and Niners. All five of the teams listed have quarterbacks, but only Andrew Luck (injury withstanding) is young enough to not consider investing in an eventual replacement.
Again, this bears watching, so don’t clutch the pearls yet. Maybe.
Games to Watch this Weekend: (All times EST)
Saturday
Kent State at Louisville (12pm, ACC Network) – After the shellacking Jackson took against the Clemson front, Louisville will be looking to get back to their winning ways against Kent State. I see this being a mini blowout.
TCU at Oklahoma State (3:30pm, ESPN) – TCU typically has a good, Big-12 ready defense. Oklahoma State is on a mission to get to the playoff. I’m really looking forward to this game.
USC at Cal (3:30pm, ABC) – The Trojans and the Bears are both undefeated, but USC is running on a 13 game win streak against them. Darnold has to be on his A-game, as well as his teammates, otherwise this could be their ‘Memphis’.
Oklahoma at Baylor (6:30pm, FS1) – In prior years, this is first to 55 wins type of game. However, post scandals I think Oklahoma is going to have more than enough to handle Baylor this week. Mayfield is still on my periphery, so I might watch this one a bit closer than I usually would on first go around.
Ball State at Western Kentucky (7:00pm, GOOD LUCK FINDING IT) – This is a Draftbreakdown.com special down the road.
Auburn at Mizzou (7:30pm, ESPN-U) – Stidham was great last week, but can he continue it against Mizzou? That’s the question that will be asked going in tomorrow night. I will be bouncing between this game and Oklahoma – Baylor.
Hawaii at Wyoming (10:15pm, ESPN-2) – One of the final games of the evening, can Josh Allen match Josh Rosen in a Warriors beat down?
UCLA at Stanford (10:30pm, ESPN) – My main event for Saturday evening. Stanford and UCLA will be the nightcap of nightcaps. Rosen trying to redeem himself after a stumble against Memphis, where he threw several passes that have gotten the ire of draft world USA. Can he get a read on the aggressive Stanford defense?
That’s it for this week. Tweet us and let us know if we’ve missed a QB you’ve had your eyes on!
