Callahan: The Coach’s Time to Win

The situation of offense on which the Washington Redskins are struggling upon and one of the most important reasons is the offensive line. The season opener on Sunday was an interesting match. Though a tough fight was put up by the Washington Redskins, they unfortunately lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. As per the given circumstances it seems there is a really long ahead of them.

The Washington’s, once quite potent, somehow got a total of 240 yards in their kit along with the commitment of four turnovers. In their defence, the sports book lines for the Redskins game prove that the Redskins did not perform well upto the mark in the first true test due to absence of players like Sean McVay, Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.

A better performance put up by the offensive line of the Washingtons could have managed to avoid the failure of the team on offense. The group consisted of top-notch players which were considered the best not only in terms of team strength but also of the overall units present in the league. Players like Tent Williams and right guard Brandon Scherff, both former top-five players in left tackle, and Morgan Moses who signed a five year long extension this offseason.

The responsibility of this loss is depends on the offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who is known as the best among all. Being one of the league’s highest paid assistant coaches, he is expected to put an end to the misery of the team by coming up with better techniques in the next season.

Talking of the Redskins, loss of the team in the preseason too is confirmation of the fact that this is a serious Issue which needs to be tackled with proper training and guidance. The team’s lack of success in the preseason is not to be taken lightly.

This team struggles in run blocking. That was expected to be an issue again this season. It is not acceptable, but it was an area the Redskins knew they needed to improve upon. On Sunday, every time the running backs got the ball, there was a swarm of defenders meeting them in the backfield. Rob Kelley and Chris Thompson were in a fix. It would be difficult for Le’Veon Bell right now to look for loopholes.

A big reason to worry for this team is pass protection, which was a strength in the last season, but not in 2017. The left guard Shawn Lauvao Scherff and Moses were the main reasons why this issue occurred whereas Williams poses as the team’s strength. Moses was successful in dominating Brandon Graham on Sunday right since the beginning. The Pro Football Focus gave poor player reviews to all three of these players, Scherff being the major cause of concern in this season.

In accordance with the opinion of head coach Jay Gruden, the ankle injury of Moses is diverting his attention and he should, therefore, give up his post and allow Ty Nsekhe to play. The latter has proved time and again to be of great benefit to the team.

The training and guidance of coach Callahan is put to question here. The Redskins are very close to the offensive line and Callahan is under tremendous pressure to give his best. .

Keeping all opinions and assumptions aside, it is important for the Washingtons to pull up their socks and put up a better fight to the Redskins. Though the start may not be as good, but the ending can get better. Washington has to find methods to keep improving at their game.
