Major League Baseball kicked off its Winter Meetings in style (and a night early) when it named the newest members of the Hall of Fame.
Sunday, the 16-member Today’s Game Era Committee announced that Bud Selig (15 votes) and John Schuerholz (16 votes) would be inducted during the annual Hall of Fame Weekend, July 30 in Cooperstown. This was the first year of the new Veterans Committee format and the 16th-straight year that a living former player has not been voted in.
“You know, I’m superstitious, so I’m not talking about it,” Selig said prior to the announcement.
Guessing we’ll be hearing a lot from him (and many of his detractors) soon.
Selig, who served as baseball’s top man from 1998-2015, is just the fifth of the ten past commissioners to be elected to the Hall of Fame. He’ll join Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Happy Chandler, Ford Frick and Bowie Kuhn.
Schuerholz has spent the last 50 years in baseball, serving as general manager for both the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves. During his tenure, Schuerholz guided both teams to World Series wins and a combined 15 division titles.
The ballot consisted of Selig, Schuerholz, Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Mark McGwire, Lou Piniella, and George Steinbrenner.
