Latest MLB News and Rumors

The Sports Daily’s Free MLB Expert Tips & Baseball Predictions

Our experts put their heads together and came up with their picks for the AL pennant, the NL pennant, the World Series, the winner of each division, and the players that will claim individual glory. These are our top MLB picks for the season:

American League Winner

The New York Yankees have the best record in the majors this year, and it’s not even close. There are no holes in this team. The offense leads the league in home runs and the rotation leads in ERA.  Some fans have started comparing the 2022 Yankees to the best teams of the last few decades.

Many are speculating that they could even break baseball’s all-time wins record. Aaron Judge has wiped the floor with AL pitching, and he can lead the Yankees to glory in the AL. They could face a stern test of their mettle against the Astros, who own them right now, but there is a sense of destiny around this Yankees team, and they should go all the way.

New York Yankees World Series Favorites

National League Winner

The Dodgers are the heavy favorites to win the NL pennant. After all, they have represented the NL in the Fall Classic in three of the past five years. The team boasts four former MVPs, and it is easy to see them going deep into the playoffs.

However, the Mets can pull off an upset against the Dodgers and make it an all-New York World Series. They sit comfortably top of a stacked division, with the best record in the NL, despite missing key players through injury. When Max Scherzer returns and Jacob deGrom is back in business, they will be terrifying. If they stay injury-free, they should go to the Fall Classic.

World Series Winner

The Yankees have not won the World Series since 2009, but the current crop can put an end to that trend. The Astros arguably pose the greatest threat to them lifting the Commissioner’s Trophy. The route to the AL pennant always runs through Houston, which could spell bad news. However, Aaron Judge’s recent three-run homer should give them a degree of confidence.

They have gone 8-4 against the top AL contenders – Tampa Bay, Toronto and Houston – this season, and the four losses were by just seven runs combined. If they win the pennant, they should go on and vanquish the AL champion.

We could see a Subway Series in late October. Both New York teams are terrific this year, but the Yankees have the quality on offense and in the rotation to win the World Series.

AL West Winner

There can only be one winner of the AL West Now. The Astros are more than 10 wins clear of their closest rivals, and they will cruise to another divisional title

AL Central Winner

The AL Central is an intriguing three-horse race between the Twins, the White Sox and the Guardians. The Guardians have done well to hang with Minnesota until now, but the Twins should pull away from the chasing pack in the second half of the season.

Byron Buxton is healthy and productive, while Jose Ramirez has started to run out of steam somewhat for the Guardians. The White Sox could make things interesting when they get important players back from injury, but right now, the odds on the Twins look really appealing.

Minnesota Twins MLB Picks

AL East Winner

This is another foregone conclusion. At the start of the season, many experts picked the Blue Jays and the Rays to finish ahead of the Yankees. However, the Yankees have made a mockery of those projections. They lead their closest rivals by 11 wins, and nobody is catching this team.

NL West Winner

The NL West never disappoints. The San Diego Padres have somehow managed to keep pace with the Dodgers – despite being seriously banged up –  and they had an identical number of wins at the time we went to press. They have four games coming up in Dodger Stadium, which gives them an interesting opportunity to seize the initiative in this division.

However, the Dodgers just look too strong for their divisional rivals. They are on pace to win 104 games, which is a realistic target for this team.

NL Central Winner

The NL Central is a straight fight between the Brewers and the Cardinals, who have moved well clear of their rivals. The Redbirds are blessed with speed, power, a diligent defense and a talented rotation. They could run Minnesota close this season.

However, the Brewers have a psychological advantage in this division. Last year, the Cardinals won 17 in a row and 90 overall and still they did not clinch the NL Central. The Brewers had the third best record in the NL last year, and they look almost as strong this year. They have the best all-round roster in the NL Central, which should ultimately prove decisive.

NL East Winner

We have already picked the Mets to win the NL, and we have to go for them to win their division too. The Braves are on a roll, but the Mets should maintain their lead during the remainder of the season. A fractured thumb for All-Star slugger Bryce Harper puts the Phillies out of contention, giving the Mets a clear path.

AL MVP Winner

This race is Aaron Judge’s to lose. He has been absolutely sensational so far this year, blasting 28 home runs while batting at a .294 average. A few weeks ago, Shohei Ohtani looked like a serious rival, as he was on fire as both a hitter and pitcher, but he has gone off the boil somewhat, while Judge has gone from strength to strength.

The Yankees’ star outfielder is on pace for 40-plus dingers, and his importance to the team was underscored by his recent game-winning contribution against the Astros. Yordan Alvarez looks like a good longer shot at +1000, but it is hard to look past Judge.

AL Cy Young Award

Gerrit Cole’s ERA has been improving steadily in recent weeks, and it has now dropped below 3.00. He is also now fourth in the majors for strikeouts, just 12 behind frontrunner Shane McClanahan. Cole is allowing a lot of hits, but he has been on an upward curve, which should continue.

It is easy to see why McClanahan is the favorite for this award, but it remains wide open. Justin Verlander has failed to maintain his blistering form and Nestor Cortes has faded. Cole could overhaul his rivals during the remainder of the season and win this award for the first time, having finished second last year.

AL Rookie of the Year

The odds of Julio Rodriguez being named AL Rookie of the Year have dropped to -145 over the past couple of weeks. He has more plate appearances, hits, at bats and stolen bases than any other rookie this year.

In that time, he has hit 11 dingers and enjoyed many multi-hit games. In fact, J-Rod is already the first player aged 21 or younger since a certain Manny Machado in 2013 to have six games with at least three hits. This award is his to lose, and it might be worth grabbing the odds now before they plunge further.

NL MVP Winner

Bryce Harper’s injury paves the way for Paul Goldschmidt to win the NL MVP award. It looked like developing into a two-horse race at one point, but his main rival has fallen by the wayside.

Goldschmidt has been red hot this season. There is still time for someone like Pete Alonso, Manny Machado or Trea Turner to make things interesting, but Goldschmidt has been the best player for one of the best teams in the business. He is the deserving frontrunner right now.

Paul Goldschmidt MLB Picks

NL Cy Young Award

Just three teams have never had a Cy Young winner: the Marlins, the Rangers and the Rockies. That could all change this year, as the Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara has been on a tear. He has a sparkling 1.95 ERA, second only to Tony Gonsolin in the NL, despite leading the majors for innings played with 106.1.

That is a remarkable feat for Alcantara, who has been supremely consistent for the Marlins this season. Joe Musgrove, Corbin Burnes and Carlos Rodon provide strong competition, but Alcantara is having the best season of his career and his ability to minimize hard contact should see him land this award.

NL Rookie of the Year

The odds on Mackenzie Gore winning the NL Rookie of the Year award have drifted out from +150 to +450 over the past 10 days. There is now value to be had in betting on him. It all stems from a disastrous couple of games against the Rockies, in which the rookie allowed 14 runs in just over six innings.

The hype around Gore has been tempered, but it should not distract us from how impressive he has been during the season. At the start of June, he was discussed as a candidate for the All-Star Game. He still has time to turn things around, and nobody has put forward a more compelling case to be named Rookie of the Year.

Jack Suwinski, who leads the rookie class for home runs, could make a good sleeper bet at +1200, but it is hard to ignore such value on Gore.

What are Free MLB Picks?

Free MLB picks are predictions on individual games or futures markets. Professional handicappers produce MLB picks to gain an edge when betting on pro baseball. Each handicapper may have a different approach, but MLB picks and MLB score predictions often lean on advanced statistical analysis and gut instinct.

Some handicappers give out their MLB picks for free. Others run a subscription service, whereby you have to pay for MLB picks. The MLB picks usually focus on the moneyline, and they regularly seek to find underdogs that will win games. However, some MLB picks will focus on the run line, the over/under line or a prop. You will find long-term MLB postseason predictions too.

Free MLB Picks Against the Spread

The spread in baseball is known as the run line. It assigns a 1.5-run handicap to the team that the sportsbooks deem to be the strongest. For example, let’s say you find this moneyline:

  • St. Louis Cardinals to beat Miami Marlins at -151
  • Miami Marlins to beat St. Louis Cardinals at +136

In this example, St. Louis is the clear moneyline favorite. If that is the case, you would expect to see this run line:

  • St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 at +130
  • Miami Marlins +1.5 at -150

If you bet on St. Louis on the run line, they would need to win by 2 or more runs. However, you would receive a larger payout than you would by betting on them on the moneyline. If you bet on the Marlins, you would be paid out if they won the game or lost by a single run. Some MLB picks will focus on the run line if there is a significant gulf in quality between the teams.

Free MLB Picks and Parlays

An MLB parlay combines predictions on multiple games into a single wager. For example, you might like three bets:

  • Atlanta Braves to beat Philadelphia Phillies at +105
  • Washington Nationals to beat Pittsburgh Pirates at -116
  • New York Mets to beat Houston Astros at +112

If you have $30, you could bet $10 on each team. If all three won, you would be paid a $30.32 profit. If instead you rolled all three together for a $30 parlay, you would be paid a $212.78 profit if all three won. That is due to the compounding nature of a parlay.

You may find some MLB picks and parlays articles, whereby handicappers offer parlay predictions. However, most cappers avoid parlays, as they come with a large house edge.

MLB Computer Picks

Supercomputers do a lot of predicting when it comes to long-term sporting events. These predictions do not just come randomly, however. Instead, they are generated due to vast amounts of data input to provide fans with the greatest insight possible from these different avenues of thinking.

These picks are provided weekly based on these statistics. They can be on any form of betting market too, not just the moneyline. You will find favorites and underdogs being selected, as well as various totals and props bets too.

MLB Consensus Picks

A consensus pick might sound like a selection or bet placed on the favorite outcome of an MLB market. However, this is not necessarily the case and certainly not what a consensus pick truly means.

On an online sportsbook, you will not only see the odds available on all the possible outcomes, but also the percentage of bets on that market which have gone on each possibility. As such, the consensus pick is a bet on the outcome on which the highest percentage of bets have been placed, which could potentially be the unfavored team in a match-up.

Alternate Expert MLB Picks

MLB picks will often be on the moneyline or spread markets, as these are the most popular types of bets for players on online sportsbooks. However, alternate picks will also be chosen and can be betted on with props and totals markets. These could include a team to win by 3.5+ runs on the totals, or for multiple home runs to be scored in an innings.

Where to Find Free MLB Picks by Experts

We will regularly update this page with our best MLB picks, so we urge you to bookmark it.

It is also worth seeking out MLB picks on particular teams by visiting their local newspaper sites. You will find picks from veteran reporters that boast unrivaled knowledge of their MLB team, including the most up-to-date team news and insight from the locker room.

However, they may not know how to get the best line, so check out our MLB odds guide to learn more about that.

How we Make MLB Predictions and Baseball Picks

There are three key tenets to producing successful MLB picks:

Watch Every Game

You need to watch MLB action non-stop and become an expert to gain an edge on fellow bettors. For most people, that is simply not possible, as you have a job, a family and a social life. That is why they leave it to professional handicapping services, which assemble large teams of cappers to watch every game and to browse a wealth of replays.

Study Important Stats

Pro baseball is a statistician’s dream. However, some stats are useless from a handicapping perspective, while others can prove very useful. The best MLB picks are based on a judicious use of the data and an ability to cherry-pick pertinent stats.

For example, late-inning pressure situation is an example of a useless stat. Another is ultimate baserunning. You can discard the whiff rate and pitchers wins and losses too. More useful statistics included weighted on-base average, fielding independent pitching, batting average on balls in play and defensive runs saved.

Find the Best Lines

One of the most important skills in MLB handicapping is the art of finding the best lines. Pro bettors make their money by finding arbitrage opportunities, pouncing on weak opening lines and fading the squares after public sentiment has caused lines to change.

At a more basic level, you also need to find the best available odds on every bet you place. That will improve your profitability on each winning pick, and greatly enhance your long-term chances of ending the season in the black.
