It’s easy to create NFL parlays on the bet slip (see image) and, add enough, legs and you will get a combo boost. It’s also the best site for betting on NFL futures and the NFL Draft, with a huge range of markets open for both, including ‘first non-QB at the draft,’ ‘total number of touchdowns thrown by the QB,’ ‘sack leader’ and much more.

While most sports feature long, drawn-out regular season schedules, the NFL has a unique format that makes every game count. Most football fans know how the NFL works but the format for the regular season and NFL Playoffs has been changing in recent years.
Below, we’ll break down some of the nuances that fans can expect to find over the course of a full NFL season.
NFL Regular Season
The NFL regular season spans 18 weeks from September to January. Each NFL team plays a total of 17 games and is awarded one bye week during that span. The league moved to a 16-game season in 1978 but owners voted on an enhanced NFL schedule for the 2021-2022 season and beyond.
In order to cut down on injuries during the exhibition campaign, the NFL also reduced the number of preseason games from four to just two. This also paved the way for the NFL regular season to be expanded from 16 games to 17 games.
NFL Playoffs
The NFL Playoffs have been expanding since the first Super Bowl in 1967. From there, the NFL moved to a four-team playoff format and expanded to eight teams when the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. By 1978, 10 teams qualified for the NFL playoffs and that number increased to 12 in 1990.
Along with an elongated regular season, the NFL Playoffs also expanded to 14 teams in 2022. This season, one additional team will qualify for the AFC and NFC Wild Card games.

Super Bowl
The first Super Bowl was a matchup between the AFL and NFL Champions in 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in that matchup but the Big Game has since evolved into one of the most watched television broadcasts in America. As a result, betting on the Super Bowl has also become the most popular event at sportsbooks in the US.
This season, seven teams from each conference will compete in the NFL Playoffs for a chance to advance to Super Bowl LVIII. After getting a week off to rest and prepare, the winners of the AFC Championship Game and NFC Championship Game will meet in Super Bowl 58.
Super Bowl LVIII will be played at Allegiant Stadium, Nevada, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Check our How to Bet on Super Bowl guide for more detailed information.
NFL Draft
Unlike other sports leagues, the NFL Draft format is relatively simple. Every franchise receives one pick in each of the seven rounds of the NFL Draft.
The NFL Draft order is determined by the reverse order of teams in the NFL standings during the previous season. Barring any trades, each round starts with the team that finished with the worst overall record and ends with the winner of the Super Bowl.
Teams that failed to qualify for the NFL Playoffs are assigned draft slots 1 through 20. Meanwhile, slots 21 through 32 will be determined by when teams were eliminated in the NFL Playoffs, along with the reverse order of their regular season records.
For a complete breakdown of the NFL Draft order, check out the chart below.
NFL Draft Order
Picks 1 – 20

How Does NFL Betting Work?
Football is a point-spread betting sport. In the NFL, spread betting is used to even out the odds and make it profitable to bet on both sides of a contest.
NFL point spreads compensate for the relative strength of each opponent by assigning a handicap for one team to win the game by a certain number of points. In addition to point spreads, NFL fans can also cash in on moneyline betting, player props betting, futures betting, and more.

NFL Betting Odds Explained
The best NFL betting sites offer odds for games during the preseason, regular season, and NFL playoffs. However, understanding NFL betting lines can be a little bit confusing, especially for residents that are new to sports betting in the US.
Online sportsbooks can display NFL odds in several different formats, including American odds and decimal odds.
Below, we’ll break down how to read American odds and decimal odds at some of the top sportsbooks for NFL betting in the US.
How To Read American NFL Odds
In the screenshot above, NFL fans can find an example of NFL betting lines using the American odds format.
When viewing American odds, the favorite for a game is determined using the minus sign (-) followed by the amount of money that a bettor must wager to earn $100 in profits. On the other hand, the underdog is labeled with a plus sign (+) followed by the potential profits on a $100 wager.
How To Read Decimal NFL Odds
While many NFL fans prefer American odds, decimal odds may be a bit easier to understand, especially for sports fans that are new to betting online.
When viewing decimal odds, the team that is designated as the favorite will be assigned lower odds. On the other hand, the underdog will be assigned higher odds.
Converting American Odds To Decimal Odds
Most sportsbooks and online casinos give members the option to change the way that NFL odds are shown. Users can swap between American odds, decimal odds, and fractional odds by changing the odds display settings.
At Bovada, this feature can be found at the bottom of the page.
There are also times when bettors may need to convert American odds to decimal odds on their own. NFL fans can convert American odds into decimal odds using the formulas below:
How To Convert American Odds To Decimal Odds When Betting On NFL Games
NFL Bet
How To Convert American Odds
🐶 Underdogs (+)
(American odds/100) + 1 = decimal odds
🏆 Favorites (-)
(100/American odds) + 1 = decimal odds
NFL Betting Lines
Legalized sports betting gives Americans access to the best NFL betting odds, markets, and features. In order to get the best NFL betting lines, football fans should sign up for more than one sports betting account and shop for the best NFL odds. At the best betting sites, NFL fans can take advantage of point spreads, cash in on same-game parlays, place Super Bowl bets, and more.
Below, we’ll go over some of the most common NFL betting markets available at the best online sportsbooks.
NFL Point Spread Betting
As we noted earlier, the NFL is considered to be a point-spread betting sport.
Since the caliber of teams can vary greatly in the NFL, point spreads are used to even out the betting odds for both sides of a contest. To do so, one team is assigned a handicap to win the game by a certain margin of victory.
With point spread betting, the oddsmakers label the favorite in a match by using the minus sign (-) followed by the number of points that the team must win by for a bet to be settled as a winner. When betting on a favorite (-) to cover the spread, the team must win by more than the projected winning margin for the bet to be settled as a winner.
On the other hand, the plus sign (+) designates a team as the underdog for a particular match. If a bettor selects the underdog (+), the team must win the game outright or lose by fewer than the projected point total to win the bet.
NFL Moneyline Betting
For football fans that want a more straightforward way to wager on the game, moneyline betting is their best bet. In the NFL, a moneyline bet is simply a wager on the winner of the game at a predetermined price.
Bettors can increase their winning percentage by selecting favorites or find hidden value by selecting underdogs to win the game outright.
NFL Totals Betting
Also known as over under betting, NFL totals give fans a chance to predict the combined score of the game. Instead of predicting the outcome of the match, football fans can also select whether a game will be a high or low-scoring affair.
When betting on the total, bettors are asked to predict whether an NFL game will go over or under a certain number of points projected by the oddsmakers.
If the over is selected, the two teams must combine to score more than the projected number of points. On the other hand, if the under is selected, both teams will need to score fewer than the projected point total in order for the bet to be settled as a winner.
NFL Game Props Betting
In addition to NFL game lines, fans can also cash in on odds in the props market. NFL game props allow bettors to get creative and narrow down their wagers to more specific markets. The best NFL betting sites offer several different game props betting options, including the winning margin, first-quarter moneyline, halftime point spread, and more. Football fans can use game props to increase their betting volume and maximize their overall betting profits.
NFL Player Props Betting
While they haven’t overtaken traditional game lines, NFL player props have become one of the most popular betting markets. With NFL player props, football fans can profit from their knowledge of individual players and cash in on individual matchups. At the best online sportsbooks, NFL fans can find head-to-head odds for player stats and over/under player props bets, along with touchdown props for every offensive player.
NFL Futures Betting
NFL fans that want to make long-term bets can place speculative wagers on the futures market. A futures bet is a wager on an event that will take place in the not-so-distant future.
When betting on NFL futures, fans will find different markets during the preseason, regular season, and NFL playoffs. The best NFL betting sites offer odds to win the Super Bowl, NFL MVP odds, NFL Draft odds, and season specials, including season-long player props.
NFL Parlay Betting
One of the best ways for sports bettors to win big, parlay betting can be an exciting way to bet on the game.
A parlay bet combines multiple selections into a single bet to generate a bigger payout. When placing a parlay bet, the odds for each outcome are multiplied together, increasing the odds and potential return of a single wager.
In order to win a parlay bet, every selection on the bet slip must be correct. If any of the picks on the bet slip lose, the entire bet is settled as a loss.
Live NFL Betting
In addition to pregame odds, fans can also place live bets while NFL games are already in progress. With the odds moving on every down, sharp bettors have plenty of opportunities to cash in on increased odds before the momentum begins to shift. During the game, the best live NFL betting sites offer traditional point spread and moneyline bets, along with odds for head-to-head player props, the result of the current drive, the next touchdown scorer, and more.
NFL Betting Apps
While some states have been slow to legalize online gambling, many football fans have already moved on to placing bets straight from their phones. Most sportsbooks are available through a mobile browser but some sites also feature dedicated gambling apps for iPhone and Android devices.
Betting apps make it quick and convenient for football fans to add funds, claim bonuses, and view NFL betting lines right from their smartphone.
By downloading one of the top NFL betting apps, football fans never have to miss out on any of the action. The best NFL betting apps give members full access to their accounts right from their mobile devices. Members can manage their account balance, place bets, browse through live NFL betting odds, and cash out bets with the click of a button.
NFL Bonuses
Throughout the NFL season, online sportsbooks offer bonuses and promotions that help football fans get the most out of their sports betting experience. Claiming bonuses allows members to reduce their overall risk, increase their profits, and have more fun when betting on NFL games. At the best NFL betting sites, fans can boost their bankroll by opting in for welcome bonus offers and other NFL betting promotions, including free bets, parlay bonuses, and more.
Below, we’ll run through some of the common types of betting bonuses that members can expect to find at the top NFL bookmakers.
- Welcome Bonus Offers – Football fans can find a wide variety of different welcome bonus offers available at the top NFL betting sites, including matched deposit bonuses, free bets, and more. Some sportsbooks even combine sports betting bonuses with free spins or free chips that allow bettors to try online casino games without risking any of their own funds.
- Matched Free Bets – In addition to welcome bonuses, most sites also offer a wide variety of sportsbooks promo codes for existing members. One of the most common NFL betting bonuses, a matched free bet gives members a free bet for placing an initial wager on an NFL game. Unless otherwise stated in the terms and conditions, the value of the free bet will often be equal to the amount of the initial wager.
- Risk-Free Bets – Many sportsbooks give members a chance to experience the thrills of winning real money online without risking any of their own cash by offering a risk-free bet. A risk free NFL bet requires no deposit or user interaction and comes at no cost for members that opt-in for the promotion. Members can simply bet on an NFL game and collect their profits upon making a correct prediction.
- Free In-Play Bets – Some sportsbooks also offer free bets for members to use after the game has already begun. An in-play free bet rewards bettors with a free betting voucher that can be used to place a free bet on a live NFL game. After placing a qualifying NFL bet, members will be granted a free live bet equal to the amount of their initial wager.
- NFL Promo Codes – A football betting promo code is an exclusive code that is used to unlock special offers at online sportsbook sites, including bonus credit, free bets and enhanced odds. These codes, also known as voucher or bonus codes, often consist of a series of letters and numbers and are exclusive to a particular brand of betting site.
Sometimes football betting promo codes are reserved for one-time single use and other times they can be used over and over. Generally, codes are available to both new and existing customers of sportsbook sites and tend to be used when registering a new account in order to unlock an introductory promotion, or as part of a reload offer.
Using Promo Codes
Using football sportsbook promo codes is a straightforward process that can be followed easily regardless of whether you are tech-savvy or not. Although the procedure can vary from one site to another, they all typically follow the same steps.
You can start by copying your preferred code from this guide and head over to your chosen sportsbook. As a new customer, you may need to enter the promo code during the registration process or when making a deposit. After you have done this, the promotion will automatically be applied to your account.

A rollover requirement is one of the most common terms and conditions associated with online betting promotions. Most NFL bonuses come with a wagering requirement that stipulates the amount of money that a member must bet through in order to process a withdrawal or release their bonus cash.

When betting on the NFL, football fans need to use all of the data available to gain an edge on the house. That includes figuring out which teams are attracting the most betting action from the public.
During an NFL season, there will be occasions where public action heavily favors one team over another. Bettors can use this information to bet with or against the public. Depending on some other factors, this can be an early sign that there might be some value in a specific matchup.
Also called the NFL consensus, these numbers can provide some useful contest as to why the odds may or may not be moving on a certain game.

Monitor The Schedule
The regular season moved from 16 to 17 games this season, adding an extra AFC versus NFC matchup to the schedule. Over the course of the year, the nature of the NFL schedule makes some matchups easier to predict than others, opening up opportunities for sharp bettors to capitalize on. Travel, bye weeks, and looming marquee matchups all play a role in how teams perform on a week-to-week basis.
Review Matchup Data
Past performance isn’t always an accurate predictive tool but it can provide some useful context about the upcoming game. NFL teams may struggle against certain opponents for several reasons, including travel, coaching schemes, injuries, and more. Evaluating how teams and players have performed in previous matchups can present a clearer narrative of what might happen next and help bettors spot value on individual contests.
Gage Team Performance
Like in other sports, NFL teams are subject to going on hot and cold streaks throughout the regular season. Sharp bettors target teams on winning and losing streaks to capitalize when teams are playing well and search for spots for regression. Football fans should also pay attention to how teams are playing in certain facets of the game, like stopping the run, for example. These trends tend to carry over from week to week and can be especially problematic against certain opponents.
Analyze Key Matchups
In the NFL, some key individual battles can have a considerable impact on the outcome of a game. While quarterbacks draw most of the attention, analyzing key matchups at other positions can also help bettors spot value and make more accurate NFL bets.
Some teams may be weaker at particular positions, dealing with injuries, or struggling in certain aspects of the game. These factors can leave them vulnerable against specific opponents. For example, some defenses may struggle to stop the run or be thin at key position groups due to injury, creating opportunities for sharp bettors to capitalize on.
Keep Track Of Individual Player Performances
Thanks to fantasy football, most sports fans are familiar with the idea of keeping track of stats for individual players. Tracking individual performances can also help sports bettors make more accurate predictions on games and give them an edge in the player props market. By placing player props bets, football fans can narrow down their selections to more specific markets and profit from individual player performances.
Follow Injuries At Notable Position Groups
Injuries can have a major impact on a team’s performance from week to week. NFL injury reports usually come out a few days before the game, which gives bettors a chance to get all of the information before placing their bets. Keeping track of injuries can also help bettors identify areas of weakness on both sides of the ball, especially key position groups, including the offensive line and defensive line.
Account For Referee Statistics
All too often, NFL referees also play a role in determining the outcome of a football game. While the NFL ranks its referees, sharp bettors must also account for referee stats. In the NFL, some referees tend to call more penalties or make certain types of calls than others. Analyzing the officiating crews helps bettors predict the frequency and types of penalties that will be called in a game or against a certain team.
