The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.
If you watched the UFC in Boston this past weekend, you likely saw some of the best fights of your life. However, if you skipped the prelim card, you missed our prelim breakout star Ilir Latifi put on an amazing 30 second performance. While our choice this week doesn’t work quite so fast on average, he is awfully effective.

What makes him impressive
What do “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, Dominick Cruz, Ian McCall and Dustin Ortiz have in common? They are the few that have taken down Joseph Benavidez in the UFC fight. Not bad company for our Prelim Breakout Star this week. Although he trains at a striking heavy gym in Roufusport, his most impressive attribute is his stellar wresting and submission grappling. In addition to a fine showing against Benavidez, he’s taken out Ray Borg and Justin Scoggins, both of which he dealt with by out-grappling them. Not a bad resume for a guy stuck on the preliminary card.
Why he has been overlooked
Although not enough could be said about his grappling, he does have a couple of losses in his five UFC attempts. Along with Benavidez, he lost to title challenger John Moraga. Certainly no shame in either of those losses, yet, they’ve kept him from being in any real “top-of-the-division” talk. Nevertheless, a win this weekend will get him back in the mix.
What makes this a good match-up
Wilson Reis has put on some good performances. He’s 3-2 in the UFC with wins over Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen. However, in his recent bout with Jussier Formiga, he exposed a weakness in his game: his takedown defense. Formiga was able to drag Reis down on 4 of 5 attempts. With Ortiz’s aforementioned wrestling chops, you have to assume he’s getting a few in this one.
