GAME NOTES: I attended the game last night, and it was a good game. Don’t always have to win to have it be a good game. Clement looked sharp during some parts of the game, but only one pitch truly hurt. If Wells swings and misses, we’re all feeling a lot better. I’m not trying to say Clement is an All-Star pitcher, but honestly … it was ONE PITCH. Let’s get off the ledge. If he still stinks on ice at the end of May, then fine. But baseball is a marathon, not a sprint… and this was ONE PITCH. Papi almost sent the Fenway crowd in a frenzy with that long, high flyout to end the game, and Wily Mo Pena (the crowd now has a new chant – “WILLY-MO! WILLY-MO!”) worked a walk in the ninth. Seems odd to say that about him, but I have a theory. He’s never experienced this amount of craziness…not in April, not in a “normal” game … and he’s been admittedly nervous on this homestand. I think instead of going up there with the home-run mentality he has always had, he was determined to reward the fans for their fervor, and that was finding a pitch to do something with or walking. He ended up walking. Combined with his determination to please the fans, plus Manny and Ortiz’s tutelage (the other day he talked about being patient and trying to find his pitch) … this guy may have turned the corner. He’s a big guy, too… I was walking by the clubhouse door and he was standing in the door letting someone in… he’s huge. It’s time for our third straight lefty. Schill takes the mound, let’s get one in the win column.
”I don’t think my enthusiasm for his potential success this year has dampened because of a bad inning.” -Terry Francona.
