15 years ago, success at Oregon had a much different definition

Amid the hilarity and hijinks, the goat jokes, recs and flames, there is a lot of great football knowledge exchanged at Addicted to Quack.

Yesterday Benzduck, the proprietor of the website Duck Downs, a consistently great read about the bad old days of Oregon football, posted this graphic from the Register-Guard in 1998. It shows the best seasons in the Oregon history, fifteen years ago.

Success had a much different definition in the days before the Times Square Billboard, Haloti Ngata and Chip Kelly:

Newer-minted fans would consider many of these seasons an abject failure. Back then, 9-2 and a Cotton Bowl loss was the pinnacle of achievement. Now, 12-1 and a trip to the Rose Bowl is a qualified success in the minds of many.

In the debate about fan behavior and expectations, it’s important to consider what a blessing and a gift the new era of Duck football is, how much hard work and envisioning it took to create it.

Oregon football has undergone a revolution. The tradition that continues today operates on a completely different standard. Amazing to think also that the core of Oregon’s coaching staff, Nick Aliotti, Steve Greatwood, Don Pellum, Jim Radcliffe and Gary Campbell, oversaw the entire transformation.

One day they have to be honored for their incredible contribution to a great success story.
