This month is the 17th anniversary of 12-year-old Little Leaguer, Henry Rowengartner, leading the Chicago Cubs to a World Series title in the movie ‘Rookie of the Year,’ one of my favorite movies of all-time — up there with ‘Little Big League’ and ‘The Mighty Ducks.’ (Incidentally, ‘Rookie of the Year,’ is also my favorite episode of Baywatch. Suck it, Cliff).
Daniel Sterns’ ‘Rookie of the Year’ transcends time as one of the ultimate American dream movies. It’s not about encouraging every 12-year-old that he should break his arm to throw 100+ MPH and pitch for a MLB team, but about teaching 12-year-olds to work hard in Little League, have fun with friends along the way and, when the time comes, a shot at the big bucks (MLB) is there for the earning — and you don’t need a 100 MPH fastball to get the big, bad hitters out (suck it, Heddo).
What a tremendous movie and what a wonderful time to celebrate another year of this Academy Award snubbed movie.
