Megan Boken case: A few more details

A few more details were released regarding how the suspects in the Megan Boken murder case were apprehended, and what charges they face.

In the hours after Boken was first discovered and pronounced dead, the Wheaton chief of police actually went public to say they had no immediate leads, imploring the public for assistance. While there were surveillance cameras in the area where the crime was committed, they were not actively recording at the time. Eyewitnesses reported a gunman firing two shots inside Boken’s vehicle, and then fleeing the scene on foot.

Three days after the crime took place, two suspects were arrested. They have now been identified as 18-year olds Keith Esters and Jonathan Perkins. Esters is charged with first-degree felony murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and robbery. Perkins is charged second-degree felony murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and robbery. They are also charged with an armed robbery and a kidnapping that took place two days before Boken’s murder.

The link between the two cases was a cell phone uncovered in the police’s investigation. Further investigation of the phone led to a witness claiming to be Esters’ girlfriend, who stated that Esters confessed to her that he had killed Boken. The witness also told police that Esters and Perkins, his cousin, had planned to commit an armed robbery.

Perkins told police that he agreed to drive Esters to the area for the robbery, stopping the car in range of Boken, who was selected as the target after they saw her speaking on her cell phone (It turns out she was on the phone with her mother). Esters approached her with a gun to rob her. It’s unclear what exactly provoked him to pull the trigger, whether Boken resisted, Esters panicked, or if something else entirely occurred. But we do know that the result was a tragedy.

It looks like this one’s just about put to bed. Hope these two creeps get the maximum punishment available by law.
