2007 June: Skidding

Well, June was a rough month. We ended the month at 12-13, a game below .500 … but no AL East foe had the stones to step up and take advantage. The Sox saw a lot of people flounder: Beckett, Cora, Lowell, Schilling, Youkilis, Lugo, Wily Mo, Timlin, Varitek, Wakefield … even the advances by Drew and Crisp couldn’t overcome it. I really want to put June behind me as fast as possible, so let’s get into it…

NOTES

2007 June: Skidding
Josh Beckett

5-0
32.2/2.48/1.04

3-0
25.0/2.88/0.88

3-2
38.1/4.46/1.30

Beckett stumbled in June, but that’s okay. What made it tough to swallow is that a lot of other players stumbled. I’m not worried.

2007 June: Skidding
Alex Cora

.360/.407/.800
.294/.339/.353

.216/.286/.378

Cora returned to earth this year, but will still see ample playing time as we attempt to find a capable shortstop.

2007 June: Skidding
Coco Crisp

.235/.274/.338
3 SB

.224/.303/.308
7 SB

.330/.362/.455
5 SB

Wow. Just … wow. This is the real Coco Crisp, and jamming his finger really came at the wrong time. Hopefully he comes back without missing a beat, because a contributing Crisp would do wonders.

2007 June: Skidding Manny Delcarmen

N/A
0-0
0.00/0.00/0.00

0-0
4.1/4.15/1.15

Delcarmen is quickly establishing himself as one of the top options in the bullpen. Hopefully the Red Sox keep him up and move on from Timlin once the roster crunch occurs.

2007 June: Skidding
J.D. Drew

.278/.376/.392
.171/.315/.237

.325/.404/.558

What a June! It almost – almost makes up for the May. Keep it up, and if we can get everyone clicking on the same cylinder, this team could be vastly dangerous.

2007 June: Skidding

Kason Gabbard

N/A
1-0
5.0/3.60/1.40

0-0
3.1/10.80/3.60

Not exactly a great start in place of Schilling (1-2, 23.1/5.79/1.41) but he’ll get another start to right the ship. Gabbard is becoming a personal favorite of mine.

2007 June: Skidding
Eric Hinske

.294/.409/.471
.114/.205/.257

.333/.429/.778

Oh, what the wonders of a small sample size (17 AB) can do for Hinske’s SLG. He’s truly the last man off the bench, and he may actually be better than that. Deadline deal?

2007 June: Skidding
Javier Lopez

0-0
3.0/0.00/1.00

0-0
7.2/4.70/1.17

0-1
9.0/3.00/1.78

Lopez gave up a bit more walks this month than usual, but we knew that coming in. He’s still an important part of the bullpen, but I’m always a tad nervous when he comes in.

2007 June: Skidding
Mike Lowell

.314/.371/.547 4 HR
.343/.400/.596 6 HR

.227/.271/.386
2 HR

Lowell plummeted back to earth after two amazing months to start the year. Hopefully he can rev it back up for a hot July.

2007 June: Skidding
Julio Lugo

.256/.346/.344
8 SB
.209/.241/.336
7 SB

.089/.170/.139
5 SB

I really have no desire to comment on this player.

2007 June: Skidding
Daisuke Matsuzaka

3-2
33.0/4.36/1.21
4-1
39.2/5.22/1.39

2-2
34.0/1.59/1.09

What a month! Has he arrived? Who knows, but we have now seen with our own eyes just how good Dice-K can be, and he’s on pace for 20 wins!

2007 June: Skidding
Doug Mirabelli

.353/.421/.706
2 HR
.080/.155/.120
0 HR

.148/.207/.148

The tradeoff from offensive ability to defensive prowess with Wakefield has to be expected.

2007 June: Skidding
Hideki Okajima

1 SV
12.2/0.71/0.63

3 SV
13.0/1.38/1.00

0 SV
13.1/0.68/0.83

The Darkman continues his effectiveness, and is a finalist in the Final Vote for the All-Star Game. Quite a deserving candidate.

2007 June: Skidding
David Ortiz

.297/.402/.615
7 HR
.333/.459/.540
2 HR

.326/.429/.539

I don’t get this infatuation with his power drought. It’s still over a .500 SLG and he’s getting a lot more hits than usual. I’m not worried. At all.

2007 June: Skidding
Jonathan Papelbon

8 SV
9.1/0.00/0.75
5 SV
10.0/3.60/1.40

6 SV
10.2/0.84/0.47

The WEEI 850 AM signs handed out at Fenway on Sunday said “Papelbon = Game Over.”I agree.

Dustin Pedroia

.415/.472/.600
65 AB

.333/.410/.473
93 AB

Hard to replicate his May, but his June showed that he’s certainly for real. He’s cemented himself as the second baseman for the Sox the remainder of the year … and should be for the next 15 years.

2007 June: Skidding
Wily Mo Pena

.172/.273/.414
.300/.382/.467

.208/.255/.313

I’m a fan of Ellsbury, he’s our future. But how can Wily Mo get any decent PT if we call up Murphy and Ellsbury? Suffer on D for five days. Get Wily Mo AB.

2007 June: Skidding
Joel Pineiro

0-0
9.2/2.79/1.66
1-0
11.1/7.15/1.59

0-1
9.1/4.82/1.61

Yes, Ellsbury came up on 6/30, but I thought it was too cheap to bounce Pineiro from this Month to Month. He’s remarkably consistent in his not-too-good WHIP…

2007 June: Skidding
Manny Ramirez

.202/.314/.315
3 HR
.327/.393/.577
5 HR

.322/.444/.494

Manny’s hitting for contact and on-base percentage… now he just needs to turn the light on in regards to power.

2007 June: Skidding Mike Timlin

1-0
7.2/5.87/1.43

0-0
1.0/9.00/2.00

0-0
9.2/5.59/1.55

Timlin’s goose is cooked. Sorry Mike, but it’s quite obvious.

2007 June: Skidding
Kyle Snyder

1-0
6.1/2.84/1.26
0-0
11.1/0.79/1.24

0-1
11.1/3.97/1.41

Getting the same amount of innings in June as he did in May, he coughed a little but he’s still been a trusted component of the bullpen.

2007 June: Skidding
Julian Tavarez

1-2
19.0/7.58/1.58
2-2
29.1/3.99/1.33

2-1
30.0/3.30/1.30

Julian Tavarez has a 3.30 ERA? In June? Wow, talk about delivering as a fifth starter. He may just last the entire season in this role, which actually may work out well.

2007 June: Skidding
Jason Varitek

.239/.325/.358
.311/.416/.541

.234/.322/.403

What happened, Jason? Right back to your April numbers. Oh well, if the trend holds, you’ll be hot in July.

2007 June: Skidding
Tim Wakefield

2-3
31.1/2.59/1.28
3-2
33.0/4.09/1.21

3-3
36.0/6.00/1.47

Wakefield had a terrible month but still eked out three wins. Wakefield is naturally quite erratic as a knuckleballer, so I’m not reading much into it.

2007 June: Skidding
Kevin Youkilis

.291/.402/.407
.402/.447/.561

.264/.395/.368

Youk coughed a bit this month. He kept his OBP more than intact, but he’s starting to look a tad lost at the plate. He didn’t impress against Eric Gagne at all.
