2010 High School Playoffs: Week 5

This week we take a look back at last week’s action, and a preview of the State finals, with particular emphasis on future Buckeyes.

Week Four Recaps- winners highlighted

Division I

  • Toledo Whitmer vs. Lakewood St. Eds

St. Ed’s was able to put a nice Defensive performance together and enough offense behind their huge offensive line to defeat Whitmer.  Kenny Hayes was said to look as dominant as he has ever looked, in his last game before he dons the scarlet and gray.  Kalis was his dominant self, and for those in attendance said that he got the best of Hayes and Wormley at times.  Were some very good battles, between two future buckeyes, and also Wormley, a 2012 target.

  • Huber Heights Wayne vs. Hillard Davidson

WOW!  That is what I will say about this one.  Braxton Miller looked great.  His stats weren’t huge, but they were effecient,12-16 134 and 55 yds rushing His only in-completions were throw aways or drops, other than 1, which he threw short.  This was my first time seeing him since the first game of the season.  He has the arm strength to make any throws.  The 18 yd out you hear about, across the field, down the field, the ability to stick the 12 yd skinny post right in the receivers chest.   But what was so great to see was his ability to lead and manage the game, he never panicked, and was in control the whole time.  He would know if they needed three yds to get a first, he would make sure to get 4 with his feet.  And Davidson brought a defense that was only giving up an average of 5pts/game.  I see Miller getting some time next year in mop up duty, and the possibilities seem crazy with the ability to put Pryor or Miller out wide at WR, as they both might be more athletically gifted than any of our receivers.

Division II

  • Trotwood vs. Uniontown Lake

What a great game.  It was 27-7 Uniontown and then Trotwood decided to wake up and make a huge comeback, and score the final TD with just 5 seconds left.  Antwan Gilbert continues to dominate for Trotwood as he put up 269 yds on 41 carries.  Bam Bradley was said to combine with his brother Nic Grigsby to have 18 solo stops, and some pounding hits from his safety spot, as Trotwoods defense allowed Uniontown to only have 15 offensive plays in the second half.

Division III

  • Akron Buchtel vs.Alliance Marlington

Buchtel and Corey Smith continued their push for a state championship as they cruised past Marlington 52-8.  Smith once again scored and had a dominating performance finishing the game with 170 yds receiving and 2 TDs. Super Soph Dymonte Thomas finished with just 23 yds on 11 carries.  He was named first team all-state as a soph.  Keep an eye out for him.

Division  V

  • Youngstown Ursuline vs. LCC

Ursuline took awhile to pull away from LCC as they look for their 3rd straight Div. V State Championship, but came out on top 51-36. Akise Teague continues to show why many buckeye fans are calling for an offer.  He scored 5 times and had over 250 yds on the ground.

Week Five Preview (State Finals, All games televised on STO)

Division I

  • Lakewood St. Eds – Kyle Kalis (2012 Commit) vs. Huber Heights Wayne – Braxton Miller (2011 Commit)

While Wayne came into the playoffs as an 8 seed, Miller has taken them on his back along with Anthon Taylor to lead Wayne to the finals, but Miller and company will have to be able to match score for score with St. Eds, as that big line and Kalis will pound on Wayne all night long.

Division II

  • Trotwood – Bam Bradley (2012 Target) vs. Maple Heights

Should be a very high scoring explosive game.  Trotwood and their many athletes take on Shaq Washington and Maple Heights.

Division III

  • Akron Buchtel – Corey Smith (2012 Target) vs. Columbus Bishop Watterson

Buchtel looks to continue their dominant playoff performance, and with a big game Smith could see an offer come his way, as big schools are starting to check in.

Division V

  • Youngstown Ursuline –  Akise Teague (2011 Target) vs. Coldwater

Ursuline is looking for their third title in as many years and Coldwater is looking to avenge their loss to Ursuline in last years state title game.  Look for Teague to have another big day, and cement himself for a buckeye offer.
