Another of the new freshman coming to town is young Shannon Scott, a promising point guard out of Alpharetta, Georgia.   Others have him slated to be the “next great Ohio State point guard”, but we’ll hold off on that anointment until we get a chance to see him play a game.  However, what news has come out about him has been nothing but promising.

Shannon Scott is a 4 star point guard out of Alpharetta Georgia.  He’s been ranked the #6 point guard in the country by Scout.com, and the 34th overall player by ESPNU.  As a junior, he lead Milton to a state championship in Georgia while averaging 14 points, 7 assists and 2.5 steals per game.  He also participated in the McDonald’s All-American game and picked up an incredible 5 steals in 12 minutes of playing time.

High School Film:

He’s #5 in the following video. About halfway through his team switches jersey colors from dark to white, though the gym stays the same. Just a heads up

Strengths:

Shannon Scott is as much a point guard as a basketball player can get.  He is the consummate floor general, the kind of player that can direct his team and deliver the ball to where it needs to go.  He has superb decision making skills and instincts, and is a true WD-40 guy – the grease that keeps things moving smoothly.

He’s a solid defender, as his steals during the All-American game attest, which will allow him to see playing time for the Buckeyes early.  He’s also got a solid mid-range game, and can hit the pull-up jumper after blitzing down the floor at full speed.  His great basketball IQ allows him to really see the floor and he regularly maintains his dribble until he knows where he wants to go with the ball.

Weaknesses:

At times, Scott tends to get moving a little too quickly and will occasionally travel – often due to something the defense is doing.  He also has a tendency to leave his feet when passing out of a lane drive, which will lead to charges.  He could also stand to work on his three point shot, but I imagine that won’t be a significant point of emphasis during the offseason.  His shooting is probably good enough for a distributer at the 1 position for now that they’ll spend time on his shot for next year.

Role for the Team:

There’s only one thing Shannon Scott does, and he does it with incredible skill.  The Buckeyes are going to have to work to find a way to get him on the court, and they will with his defensive abilities.  The current speculation, and what we already mentioned with Aaron Craft, is that Shannon Scott will start at the 1 with Craft occupying the 2.  This would allow two guards with superb ball handling and stealing skills to make life miserable for opposing teams in the early going.

It is possible, though unlikely, that Scott will come off the bench as the 6 man.  I think that is more likely from Jordan Sibert, as typically you want a guy to give you a spark off the bench either offensively or defensively.  Scott isn’t a “spark” kind of guy.  He’s more of an even-keeled, calm kind of player that makes the offense run more smoothly.  He’s definitely the kind of guy you want on the court to set a tone for the game.

Either way, Mr. Scott will be joining the Buckeyes on the court this season one way or another.  He seems like the kind of player that could make a significant difference for this team, particularly filling in for some of the roles vacated by graduating players.
