It’s a Christmas Eve tradition… gathering around the fire with family, celebrating the sacred moments of a fun, old fashioned holiday, and watching unbearably crappy football to avoid conversation with that one uncle who’s been at the egg nog since noon.
The Basics: Saturday, 8:00 PM ET on ESPN, from Honolulu. Nevada (7-5, 5-2 WAC) and Southern Mississippi (11-2, 6-2 CUSA).
The History: Wow, has it really been two years since we visited the beautiful islands? Man, have changed since then- new writers, new jobs, there and back again with the website… but here we are. Mele kalikimaka and all that- Oh look! Nevada’s playing! Thank goodness for consistency, right?
Nevada- A rushing powerhouse, and the gods that brought the “pistol” to the NCAA vernacular, the Wolfpack are 8th in the nation in rushing yards with 251.8 per game. While not the 3/1000 monster they had several years, their three headed monster has about 700 yards each for the season, to go with @1500 yards in the air for their QBs. The Pack had a huge “win” in their one point loss to Texas Tech, and were blown out by Oregon and Boise State.
Southern Miss – When we last saw the Golden Eagles, they were ending Houston’s BCS Buster run and getting WAAAAY ahead of themselves. A solid defense that ranks 29th nationally for in points against, they have a win against a solid Virginia team to counterbalance the head scratcher versus UAB. Look for Austin Davis to try to add to his 3331 passing yards for the Eagles to be successful.
Fun Facts- Are you lucky enough to be in Honolulu for the break? Good news… There are PLENTY of tickets available for this one. And yes, Nevada will be financially responsible for selling all of their tickets- you can bet we’ve got this cued up as an example for “why the bowls are not working”. Oh, and be sure to enjoy the beans…
