As our buddy Cory from Three Rivers Burgh Blog once said, “To call the Jets offense mud is a compliment to them and an insult to mud.”
Defense
Statistically, the Jets had one of the best defenses in the league last year, but they struggled to generate pressure on the quarterback out of their base sets. No one on their team had more than 6 sacks, and only two players had more than 5. They were able to bring pressure when Rex Ryan schemed up some corner and safety blitzes. The Jets spent their first two draft picks on defensive linemen, which should help against the run. Even though statistically they were good against the run, they were gashed by the Steelers twice, including in the AFC Championship game.
Intangibles
The Jets keep trying to add playmakers around Mark Sanchez, and they can keep adding as many former Steelers receivers as they want, but the man under center hasn’t changed. As long as Sanchez is there, he’s still going to struggle getting the ball to the receivers. The Jets running game and defense is good enough to make them playoff contenders once again.
If the Jets were a Beer, they would be:
Heineken
Over-marketed and talked about waaaay too much for how good (or not good) it actually is (it’s really not that good). But people drink it because they think it makes them trendy or popular or something. Or because they’re jagoffs, kinda like New Yorkers. Oh yeah, and it comes in a green bottle.
