Earlier this offseason, Total Titans took a look at possible veteran quarterbacks the Tennessee Titans could go after once free agency/trades begin. Of course, in addition to pursuing a veteran signal-caller, GM Mike Reinfeldt also confirmed that the team will probably select a young QB in April’s NFL Draft.
Naturally, as we did with the veteran options, over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll dedicate an article towards discussing each of the potential young QBs who could be on the Titans’ radar later this month.
We’ll start off the series by examining perhaps the draft’s most polarizing QB prospect…Auburn’s Cam Newton.
Why the Titans should draft him
When it comes to his physical attributes, Cam Newton is above and beyond his fellow QB draft peers. Possessing the combination of size (6’5″, 248 lbs) athleticism and arm strength, Newton has the measurables that will leave the scouts drooling.
Although he’s been attempting to make the transition from a spread offense in college to the under-the-center approach in the pros, Newton certainly has the upside that’s entered him in the conversation of being one of the players who could emerge as the draft’s overall #1 selection.
If Newton doesn’t hear his name called first on draft day and slips a bit, considering the team’s need for a young gunslinger who has the potential to one day develop into a franchise signal-caller, the Titans would have to at least contemplate the thought of drafting Cam.
Why the Titans should pass
The red flags surrounding Newton have more to do with some character/personal issues than his football abilities. Those concerns have some believing that the risks outweigh the rewards when it comes to drafting Cam.
Considering the failed Vince Young experiment, the Titans will be looking for a young QB who’s mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with being the team’s designated future signal-caller. Newton’s perceived “character flaws” could cause the team to look in another direction if he’s somehow available when selection #8 rolls around.
Verdict
Personally, I think Newton has what it takes (physically and mentally) to succeed in the NFL. However, color me surprised if Newton’s NFL career transpires in the city of Nashville. If Carolina doesn’t take him with pick #1, I don’t see him falling past Buffalo at #3.
