2012 NBA Draft Profile: Austin Rivers

Austin Rivers
Duke – Freshman (Born 1992)
Shooting Guard
6’5″ 203lbs

The Good:

– highly skilled scorer
– 6’7″ wingspan
– great genes/pedigree – grew up around the NBA game due to father, Doc
– extremely confident
– willing & able to take & make the big shot
– able to play either guard positions
– solid ball-handler
– NBA quickness
– good at drawing fouls
– can shoot it from deep
– motivated/hard worker

The Bad:

– a year older than other freshman
– could be a NBA “tweener”
– questionable shot selection – selfish?
– needs to take better care of the ball (more turnovers than assists his freshman year)
– needs the ball in his hands to create – doesn’t play off ball well
– doesn’t bring much else to the table other than scoring
– no mid-range/pull up game

NBA Comparison:

O.J. Mayo, Jamal Crawford

The Skinny:

Austin Rivers was a polarizing player in college, and that probably won’t change much in the NBA – he will shoot his team in and out of games.  Will he be a better pro than his Pops was?
