Day Two was supposed to be the day all the quarterbacks finally came off the board. After a single QB went on Day One (EJ Manuel), many expected the quarterbacks to come quickly off the board. But Day two of the draft saw just two quarterbacks (Geno Smith and Mike Glennon) leave the draft board.
Along with our second, third, and fourth rated quarterbacks in the 2013 class, a handful of receivers and defensive lineman remain ripe for the picking on Day Three of the NFL Draft.
1. Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
Nassib was projected to be considered for the #8 overall pick, but surprisingly passed over after the Bills traded down to 16 overall to take EJ Manuel. But 79 picks later, our second rated quarterback is still on the board. By now, it’s clear NFL teams don’t view him as highly as we do.
2. Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Our number two rated receiver pre-draft thanks to his decisiveness and ability to catch away from his body, Patton likely fell on draft day thanks to his lack of complete athletic upside and diminishing value of the receiver class this year. I’d still “bang the table” for this NFL ready starter.
3. Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
After a brutal year at Arkansas with his head coach and top four receiving weapons gone, Tyler Wilson suffered again, this time on draft day as he watched quarterback-needy teams pass on him. A high character, tough quarterback, Wilson should still have a long NFL career.
4. Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama
While he’s not a “sexy” defensive lineman compared to some of the first rounders, Williams is a road grader who consistently holds his ground on the interior and can play the coveted nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme at a high level. He’s a Day Three pick that could easily be a Day One starter in the NFL.
5. Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The third quarterback on this list, Matt Barkley is the most well-known and fan respected quarterback on this board. His lack of arm strength and poor play as a senior is likely what gave NFL teams doubts. As with the rest of the quarterbacks on the board, NFL teams’ lack of value placed on Barkley is shocking from an evaluations standpoint.
6. Alex Okafor, DE, Texas
A former defensive tackle, Okafor uses his hands as well as any defensive end in this draft class. Likely only a 4-3 defense fit, Okafor’s lack of ideal bend and edge-setting quickness is what caused him to fall. However, he can add value as an inside collapsing end rusher and help in the run game.
7. Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The former Tennessee standout receiver was kicked out of the program by now former head coach Tyler Bray for a “violation of team rules”. Repeated concerns off the field and rumors of being a poor teammate and having serious attitude problems (even at Tennessee Tech) is likely what caused this uber-talented weapon to fall to Day Three.
8. Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
Despite ranking him highly, seeing Greene fall to the third day of the draft isn’t all that surprising. He’s an undersized linebacker who takes chances to much at times and is forced to “run around” blockers. However, he has great range, a high football IQ, and the innate ability to force fumbles. The former safety could be a fringe starter for 3-4 or 4-3 teams.
9. Quanterus Smith, DE/OLB, Western Kentucky
A unique rusher who thoroughly impressed in his game against the Alabama offensive line, an ACL injury mid-season derailed Smith’s chances of being a top two round pick. With him slipping to Day Three, it’s clear that NFL team’s still have concerns about his injury and aren’t willing to take him in the Top 95 picks based on a handful of impressive senior year games.
10. Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
A feisty, physical cornerback, Poyer’s lack of great speed and size is what pushes him down this far. Still the best cornerback on the board (for us at least), Poyer’s fit as a Cortland Finnegan-esque type defensive back should make him a solid 4th round potential starter for some lucky team.
