The original 10 day countdown post was taking too long to get finished for today. It will run tomorrow. Today’s post focuses the rest of the American. I’m going to answer and all questions from this holiday weekend.
How is the rest of the league doing?
Not that great.
Is anyone ranked yet?
No, although UCF is very high in the AP poll in the receiving votes part.
Was UC close?
Nah.
We know what happened with your great recap of Thursday’s action, how about the rest of the weekend?
Thank you. Here are the weekend results.
Friday
BYU 35 Connecticut 10
UTSA 27 Houston 7
Saturday
Penn State 26 UCF 24
Memphis 63 Austin Peay 0
South Florida 36 Western Carolina 31
East Carolina 52 North Carolina Central 7
Sunday
Baylor 45 SMU 0
Some of those look very bad, who looked the worst?
SMU was the worst by a mile. The Mustangs only gained 67 yards of offense. They had no passing game, no running game and oh yeah, the defense was bad. Besides that, great. There are a lot of rumors about June Jones and his job status. I don’t know if he makes it through the season.
Did any teams make pretty significant mistakes in week 1?
UCF started their freshman DiNovo over Holman. That looks like a mistake because DiNovo didn’t do much at all in the first half. Holman took over and UCF’s offense looked unstoppable. The Knights looked like they could be the class of the league in the second half. Of course, the hole they faced was too large and Penn State was able to come back and win.
Who had an amazing performance that no one saw coming?
USF freshman running back Marlon Mack. Mack ran for 275 yards on 24 carries, an 11.5 yard average. He scored all 4 of the USF touchdowns in their 36-31 victory. He was legit.
Is USF going to have QB problems again this year?
Starter Mike White was 9 of 26 for 181 yards and he threw a pick. So yeah, USF is going have to QB trouble again.
How did ECU quarterback Shane Carden perform? I hear he is very good.
Shane Carden performed very well. Carden had 283 yards on 26 of 37 passing with 3 TDs in week 1 against whoever they played. Carden’s top target was Isaiah Jones, who had 10 receptions for 150 yards.
Speaking of that, can you throw some stat leaders at us? Preferably from the American site?
Sure.
