The Oakland Raiders finally selected someone who makes lots of sense to add to their roster by adding an edge pass rusher to build their defense. With the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Raiders selected Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack.
NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock’s views Mack as top-ranked player in this year’s draft class, Mack is viewed as the ideal edge rusher in a 3-4 defense. With the Raiders in a 4-3 scheme head coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, will likely move him to a strong-side backer on early downs, moving to a pass-rushing role in sub packages.
Mack makes history by being the first Buffalo prospect ever drafted in the first or second round of the NFL draft.
Last season he was a finalist for the Butkus Award. Mack holds the NCAA record for most career forced fumbles (16) and shares the record for most tackles for a loss (75) he will certainly shine in the “Black Hole”.
Nationally he gained his popularity with his amazing performance against Ohio State Buckeye’s this past season, afflicting 2.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown while torching their offensive tackle Jack Mewhort.
McKenzie continues to strengthen the defense by adding Mack in the first round. As the team did earlier this off-season by adding solid veterans through free agency he signed two big name free agent veterans LaMarr Woodley, Antonio Richardson, Justin Tuck will all add leadership and a new dimension to the defense.
Other signings on defense included two veteran corners from San Francisco in Terrell Thomas and Carlos Rodgers. While at the same time, the Raiders brought back some of their own veterans defensive tackle Pat Sims and safety Charles Woodson
McKenzie next job is to come up with a franchise quarterback.
