New York Rangers forward Dan Carcillo and Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust have both been suspended, while Rangers forward Derek Stepan is out indefinitely with a broken jaw after a series of events in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
It began at 2:45 of the first period when Prust delivered a hit to the head of Stepan, who was down on the ice for a few moments and then exited the game. Even with the injury no penalty got called, yet the play was later reviewed by the Department of Player Safety and Prust was handed a two game suspension. Rangers head coach
Alain Vigneault announced that Stepan suffered a broken jaw that required surgery. While no timetable has been set for his return, Stepan, who has never missed a game in his career, is unlikely to play in game 4. Derick Brassard will be in the Rangers line up in place of Stepan.
Later in the period, Rangers forward Dan Carcillo, who was in a scuffle and unhappy with Prust’s hit, shoved linesman Scott Driscoll as he was being escorted to the penalty box and was assessed a game misconduct as a result. As per rule 40.3, Category II, which states”Any player who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.”, Carcillo was later given an automatic 10-game suspension.
The Rangers, who lead the series 2-1 will look to find a way to solve Montreal goaltender Dustin Tokarski and take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Meanwhile, the Canadiens will look to tie the series at 2 when the two teams face off in Game 4 on Sunday night at 8 pm on NBC Sports Network from Madison Square Garden.
