2015 Heisman Watch: Week 6

.

Another great week of college football is in the books, which means another look at our top five 2015 Heisman Trophy candidates. Week 6 will show the most movement, to date, in the list because we have one running back dropping out of contention while a new running back has vaulted to number three on the list. As always, Leonard Fournette continues to dominate for the LSU Tigers. The question now, is can Fournette continue this 25+ touch workload throughout a tough SEC schedule?

OUT: Paul Perkins / UCLA / RB – Paul Perkins struggled this week. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry for his second consecutive game and failed to break the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game. It was fun while it lasted, Paul.

5. Nick Chubb / Georgia / RB – Chubb was our number three choice last week but has dropped to the fringe because of an uninspired performance. Chubb’s statistics in a box score look great; 20 carries for 146 yards but over half of those yards were accounted for on one 83-yard run when the game was already decided. Chubb could not carry his team or, at least, keep his team in contention in their contest against the Alabama Crimson Tide. A Heisman Trophy winner must be able to do that and Chubb wasn’t.

4. Jared Goff / Cal / QB – Goff is entrenched in the number four spot. He has led his Cal Bears to their first 5-0 start since 2007. The Bears squeaked out a 34-28 win against Washington State but it could have been a lot worse had Goff not led his team back from a 14-point deficit in the first half. Goff showed up for this game. He completed 73.3 percent of his passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns. Although this game was huge, Goff and the Bears’ next game against Utah will be a season defining game. If Cal can pull out a win against a supremely talented Utah team, not only will Cal leapfrog many in the Top 25 polls but also Goff’s name could be mentioned right behind Fournette’s for the Heisman Trophy.

3. Ezekiel Elliott / Ohio State / RB – Our newcomer launched himself into the number three spot by carrying the Buckeyes’ offense over the Indiana defense. Elliott rushed for 274 yards and three touchdowns. How long were his touchdown runs, you ask? 55 yards, 65 yards and he capped it off with a 75-yard run that put the Buckeyes up by two touchdowns. Elliott will bring his 729 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to next Saturday’s game against Maryland.

2. Trevone Boykin / TCU / QB – Boykin led his TCU Horned Frogs over Texas in a blowout 50-7 win. Boykin threw for 332 yards, five touchdowns and rushed for 52 yards; a typical day for him. The Horned Frogs will take on Kansas State next week where Boykin will have to continue to put up these types of numbers to ensure that Ezekiel Elliott stays in the number three spot.

1. Leonard Fournette / LSU / RB – He’s not going anywhere. In his fourth game of the season, Fournette ran for his third straight 200-yard game. He surpassed his touchdown total (10) from 2014 in nine fewer games and will probably surpass his rushing total (1034) from 2014 next week when the Tigers face off against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Fournette is sitting at 864 yards and another 200-yard game is more probable than not.
