Draft workouts are continuing this week for teams across the league as we are a few days away from the month of June. Today, according to Michael Scotto of SheridanHoops, the Phoenix Suns worked out Penn State guard and Philadelphia native D.J. Newbill. The other players that the Suns are working out are Duke’s Quinn Cook, Georgia’s Marcus Thornton, BYU’s Ty Haws, Xavier’s Matt Stainbrook and Florida State’s Aaron Thomas.
For Newbill, this is a great opportunity to workout for the Suns as they are a very guard oriented team. This not Newbill’s first workout as back on May 6 he worked out for the Utah Jazz.
Newbill had a solid college basketball career that started out at Southern Mississippi. As a freshman at Southern Mississippi, he averaged 9.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 30.5 minutes per game. Newbill then transferred from Southern Mississippi to Penn State, where he exploded onto the scene.
His first year at PSU, Newbill averaged 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 36.5 minutes per game. Over the next two seasons, Newbill’s game developed and he became a focal point of the Nittany Lions’ offense. This past season as a senior, he averaged a career-high 20.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.3 steals in 37.1 minutes per game.
If Newbill performs well in his pre-draft workouts, I can see him being on a team’s summer league roster and could make an impact in the D-League like his former teammate Tim Frazier.
