2015 NFL Season: Top Five Free Agents Still Available for Needy Teams

At the start of training camp, fan bases around the country begin to get excited and talk about their teams prospects (and likely talk trash about the New England Patriots deflate gate saga), but it’s also a time teams are evaluating their rosters and making decisions on where they’re deficient.

Super Bowl contenders and rebuilding teams alike both will use the next few weeks to assess their rosters, and the veteran free agents are impatiently waiting to see if they’re services will be called upon.

This is the time of year where these free agents are eagerly waiting by their televisions, watching training camp, and wondering if/when they’ll be called. We’re here to project the following free-agents most likely to get the call, as well as project their potential landing spots:

  1. Evan Mathis, 6’5” 300, OG

Despite a recent divorce with the Eagles, Mathis remains one of the best in the business at the position. Rarely making mistakes, he is the model of consistency with a great blend of athleticism and power. Has the agility to block in space and power to create movement in the run game. He will not come cheap, which may limit teams’ interest.

Potential Suitors: Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts

  1. Brandon Spikes, 6’2” 255, ILB

Though he is troubled and has a spotty track record, he is an outstanding two down linebacker who plays downhill. Will need to play a certain role as he’s a liability in coverage, but a team looking for a thumper in the middle could use his services. However, it will take a leap of faith.

Potential Suitors: Washington Redskins, New York Giants

  1. Jake Long, 6’7” 322, OT

Although injuries have taken their toll on the former all-pro, there is still talent left. He may not be suitable as a Left Tackle moving forward, but he can be a more than suitable player at Right Tackle. He has length and power, and teams are always looking for more offensive line help this time of year.

Potential Suitors: New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos

  1. Dwight Freeney, 6’1” 268, OLB/DE

The once star Freeney is now past his prime and coming off two below average seasons, but there’s still something to be said for pass rushers and their need in the NFL. For a team looking for pass rush help, Freeney may be a cost effective choice to provide a boost. He’s savvy, has natural leverage, and would be a good presence in the locker room.

Potential Suitors: Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys

  1. Pierre Thomas, 5’11” 215, RB

He’s on the wrong side of 30, but he’s proved to be an exceptional option as a third-down back over the past several seasons. He excels in small areas, which makes him great in the screen games, along with adequate power to break tackles and fall forward for extra yardage. Still one of the best receiving backs in the NFL, a team needing quality depth would be pressed to find a more reliable option.

Potential Suitors: New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens

  • Rob Sims, 6’3” 312, OG

  • Red Bryant, 6’4” 323, DT
