OSU Quarterback Controversy May End Soon
Ohio State’s quarterback situation is still up in the air after three games, but that may change soon. Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer said he is ready to establish a definitive starting quarterback, even if he is not sure who will gain the position. Currently junior Cardale Jones and sophomore J.T. Barrett have split time at QB, but neither have played well enough to end the starter controversy. Last week, the pair combined for three interceptions and 136 yards as the Buckeyes barely eked out a 20-13 win against Northern Illinois.
Notre Dame Lose Another Starter to Season-Ending Injury
Notre Dame’s injury woes continue. During a strong statement win over Georgia Tech for the Fighting Irish, sophomore safety Drue Tranquill tore his ACL in his right knee after while celebrating a pass breakup. Saturday’s game was Tranquill’s first start of the season. Last season, Tranquill tore the ACL in his left knee, which cost him the final two games of the season. This is the sixth starter Notre Dame has lost for the season this year to injury, not counting players like potential starting quarterback Everett Golson (transferred to FSU) or running back Greg Bryant (Reportedly left Notre Dame after being suspended this year).
Oregon Starting QB Vernon Adams Jr. Misses Start Because of Broken Finger
Oregon starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. confirmed he has a broken finger on his throwing hand. The Senior transfer told reporter he suffered the injury to his index finger week one against Eastern Washington and aggravated it the following week in the Ducks’ loss to Michigan State. While Adams said he was a “game-time decision”, he did not play. In Adams’ absence, junior Jeff Lockie shined in his first career start and Oregon ran over Georgia State 61-28. Adams said his finger is now at “80 percent”, but there is no official word on if he will start next game against Utah.
Georgia QB Greyson Lambert Makes History, Breaks NCAA Record
Junior Greyson Lambert made history against this weekend. Georgia’s starting quarterback completed 24 of his 25 passes again South Carolina, setting the NCAA record for best completion percentage in a single game. Previously the record was co-held by Tee Martin of Tennessee and Geno Smith of West Virginia, who both had games where they completed 23 of 24 passes. A minimum of 20 pass attempts is required to be eligible for this record.
Two TCU Players Arrested, Suspended from Team
Two players on TCU’s football team were arrested today after a felony complaint of robbery and bodily injury. Senior Mike Tuaua and freshman Andre Petties-Wilson were accused of attacking a fellow TCU student and stealing a case of beer. According to the complaint, this incident occurred September 4. According to the school, both players have been suspended from the program. Mike Tuaua, a defensive end, started five games last year, but has not played in the past two games this season. Petties-Wilson is a backup wide receiver.
True Freshman Will Face Stricter Academic Requirements Starting Next Year
A new rule may drastically cut down the number of true freshman participating in football and other sports. Starting next year, freshman athletes will be assessed in several core courses, including four years of English, four years of math, and two years of natural/physical science. Athletes who do not have a 2.3 GPA in these core course will be forced to take an academic redshirt year, allowing them to practice with the team but not play in games.
