Throughout this draft season, OptimumScouting.com will host multiple “Draft Journals” that hopefully will give insight into the draft process and into each individual prospects background, lifestyles and ups-and-downs of their respective draft processes.

This is receiver Jay Lee, who hails from a Baylor program known for producing NFL receivers. This is his second journal entry. View his first journal entry here.

Going into my Pro Day, I had about two weeks here in Waco to prepare myself for the second part of the draft process. The week leading up to Pro day I was working out once a day lifting weights, running routes, working on my 40 stance, and trying to stay in shape.

Then I received a text from my father saying “Instead of one workout a day, increase to two. Work on your 40 stance and routes in the afternoons because I want you to run your 4.4.” That was a turning point in my thought process. So late nights around 8 p.m., I would be at Baylor’s indoor facility with my cousin working on the little things to prepare me for March 16th– Baylor’s Pro day. I feel like the past two months at Exos in Frisco, Texas, prepared me mentally and physically for what was to come. I definitely got stronger, was introduced to new techniques, and was around a group of guys who were willing to push each other and ultimately achieve our common goal of producing numbers to wow NFL personnel.

I felt like I did a tremendous job of going out and handling business like I thought I would. My main focus was just to run a fast 40 time because that’s what my agent was hearing all throughout the draft process. I ran a 4.51 laser time (4.46 handheld), jumped a 33 ½ inch vertical, a 9’11” broad jump, a 6.8 L cone, and a 4.3 short shuttle.

Those numbers I think helped me out. Going into Pro Day, I knew that I set myself up for success during the Senior Bowl, then after not receiving a combine invite, I wanted to once again prove that I’m a guy worth giving a shot. I definitely envisioned myself going out to this big event and handling business –no matter how much pressure people may think it is.

Therefore, after a successful Pro day, there were a handful of teams that reached out to me to say I did a great job in position drills (running the routes at full speed, catching all the passes), and the other 4 tests that were a part of Pro day. Those teams were the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins.

Since Pro day, I had one scheduled team workout with the Detroit Lions here in Waco. I also have a couple of team visits coming up soon that I’m really looking forward to. After the Browns agreed to terms with Robert Griffin III, I reached out to congratulate him on signing with a new team and the opportunity to start fresh. He’s a person that checks on me from time to time, so we talked about my upcoming visits and the draft process, and he gave me good insight on what’s to come.
