With both the Shrine Game and Senior Bowl now complete, all eyes focus on Indianapolis and the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine. For the Philadelphia Eagles, this year’s draft is very important as they have many positions of need including quarterback. Right now, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position especially if Sam Bradford does not return. Where does new head coach Doug Pederson turn if that happens?
On Saturday, Draft analyst Chad Reuter posted his latest four-round mock draft on NFL.com. In the first round, he has the Eagles adding more firepower to the defensive line, selecting Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.
Here is what Reuter said about Robinson:
“If new coordinator Jim Schwartz changes the Eagles’ defensive front to his typical 4-3, A’Shawn Robinson should bolster the unit’s interior, even allowing the athletic Fletcher Cox to play outside on early downs.”
This season, Robinson was named a Consensus All-American as he had 46 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two pass deflections. Adding Robinson to Schwartz’s scheme to rotate with Bennie Logan and play with Cox is a scary thought for opposing team’s quarterbacks.
Fast forward to the third round of Reuter’s mock draft and he has the Eagles selecting quarterback Christian Hackenberg out of Penn State. Since his outstanding freshman year under former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien, Hackenberg has regressed under head coach James Franklin the last two years.
Hackenberg, the 6-foot-4, 234 lb. junior did not have a great season this year as he was constantly under pressure. This season, he only completed 53.5 percent of his passes (lowest of his career), while passing for 2,525 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. A lot of people are wondering what type of quarterback will Hackenberg be at the next level. Will he be the quarterback we saw the last two seasons or will he be the quarterback that we were all salivating over as a freshman?
If Hackenberg becomes a Philadelphia Eagle, he could work well in Doug Pederson and Frank Reich’s offense.
