2017 NBA All-Star Game Awarded To Charlotte

In a formal announcement expected tomorrow, reports have surfaced that the Charlotte Hornets have won the bid to host the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend.

Bids for the 2017 extravaganza were taken last summer. According to The Charlotte Observer, Adam Silver all but assured Charlotte would receive an All-Star Weekend bid in the near future after some upgrades and renovations were made to Time Warner Cable Arena. The Charlotte Observer also claims the city agreed to pay $27.5 million for those upgrades that seemingly will be a well-spent investment now that the winning bid is official.

Typically held in February, the NBA All-Star Weekend includes the Skills Challenge, Three-Point Contest and Slam-Dunk Contest. Other events include the Celebrity All-Star Game, the Rising Stars Game and the D-League All-Star Game.

It’s not too early to think about planning for the festivities. Hipmunk is any NBA fan’s one-stop shop for All-Star Weekend reservations, with thousands of affordable Charlotte flights from most major airline carriers and a plethora of available hotels in Charlotte near the arena or main airport.

There are no prices available for this year’s NBA All-Star Game in Toronto for next season, but if history tells us anything, prices in Charlotte will be closer to the events in 2012 and 2014. The secondary market ticket information below is provided by TiqIQ.com.

2011 | Staples Center | Los Angeles, LA | Average Ticket Price: $2,485.57

2012 | Amway Center | Orlando, FL | Average Ticket Price: $1,146.36

2013 | Toyota Center | Houston, TX | Average Ticket Price: $2,620.48

2014 | Smoothie King Center | New Orleans, LA | Average Ticket Price: $1,019.89

2015 | Madison Square Garden | New York, NY | Average Ticket Price: $1,795.18

With Charlotte being a smaller city than the likes of Los Angeles, New York and Houston, it is reasonable to assume the average ticket price will be around the $1,000 mark instead of being closer to the $2,000 mark.

According to The Charlotte Observer, Time Warner Cable Arena seats just over 19,000 people and was funded by the city for about $260 million. It has hosted other large events such as the Democratic National Convention, the ACC postseason tournament and will be hosting a PGA Championship golf tournament in 2017 as well.
