Sure, what the hell. I took these with my computer (I don’t have a phone that takes pictures, nor do I ever care to get one), so they’re of minimal quality and I could not zoom. But let’s take a look.
The first of several taken from my seat just off mid-court. There really is no perfect mid-court spot in the bleachers. The best spot in the house to watch a match is the up referee’s spot. It’s the only place you can see everything. You can see a little of the new scoreboard I gushed about in the main post as well.
I was never going to really capture the video board as it displayed any images, but this is a good look at its size and a slightly better look at the new all-LED scoreboard.
There I kind of caught a video board image! That’s the Viking logo. You can….sort of tell.
Of course you kind of have to take my word for it that it’s both teams on the court at the same time, since they both use navy blue uniform shorts, and shirts for warmup. You can also see the LED panel in front of the scorekeeper’s table.
I didn’t think you could tell, and indeed you can’t, but those white banners at the top of the picture list league and national championships for our school. Viking Pride! You can also see the two wall-wounted LED-panels, on either side of where it says WWU behind the basketball hoops (one is just barely visible).
You can see a lot of the gym here.
This is a pretty good shot as well.
This is just after the player introductions, as the match was about to get underway.
And then came the in-competition shots…I didn’t record when I took these, so it’s impossible to give context for them. I’ll just lay them all out. The shift in vantage point marks the third set, when I had to find a power plug for my computer (it afforded a really excellent vantage point to observe the servers, though, and I’ll probably sit there the whole match tomorrow).
A few words about that photo…one of the other things I asked ‘Ginger’ McPherson when I had a quick word with her after the match was what they say when they’re in that huddle. They shout something after they put their hands together (which you can see there). It seemed like the same thing each time, but she told me it’s semi-random and changes based on what’s happening in the match — could be ‘Win!’ could be ‘Take two!’ or any number of things.
I actually took a great deal of images in a row of this serve to capture it altogether…and then I /facepalmed when I remembered I could have just as easily taken a videoclip.
Carmen Vasilatos was brought in to the match at various points mostly just to serve. That happens with inexperienced players (and she’s a redshirt freshman) with great ball control skills like setters or liberos. The program lists her as playing both of those positions. It’ll be interesting to see which she eventually settles in. Though it looks like she’ll blast the cover off the ball, standing with her back practically to the wall, her serves were really comparable to most other players’.
And of course,
